21mm here between about 8pm and 4am from last night's front.

T-storm Outlook last night looked good for much of the North Island later today?

The cold pool shows up quite well on sat pic.

The upper North will get the main impacts from it tomorrow. Any daytime heating will lift instability levels, coupled with low level convergence, may see isolated heavy thundery falls of small hail. There is a chance somewhere is going to get a decent hail accumulation tomorrow, possibly in the Waikato. There will need to be surface heating though.

Back to winter for a day or two with the upper atmosphere really cooling off today, it will be cold under the showers.

Should get higher than 16C this morning, currently 14C.

Unstable couple of days, 18-20 October

Unread post by jamie »

Making a thread for this. It is more than just general weather.

Things are looking quite unstable for the next couple of days for quite a bit of NZ while the rest of NZ has prolonged heavy rain.

I really like how cold the upper air is going to be and like NZstorm said there could be some good accumulations of hail on Wednesday. The one thing we are going to need though is heating. It looks to me like this will be probably our major limiting factor. But with the upper air being so cold less heating is required i suppose.

Was just about to do the same thing. :-)

Edit:
MS have just issued their 'Severe Thunderstorm Outlook' for Wednesday, which also looks promising.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning:
77ba-13314acaa60-36ee80-13314bc3ac0.0.png
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
Issued by MetService at 02:54 pm Tuesday 18 October 2011.
Valid until 03:37 pm Tuesday 18 October 2011.
This warning affects people in the following local government areas:
MARLBOROUGH.
At 02:37 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near WARD, SEDDON and THE AWATERE VALLEY.
These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the east, and are expected to lie near WARD, SEDDON and TAYLOR PASS at 03:07 pm and near WARD and SEDDON at 03:37 pm.
These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain and large hail.
Very heavy rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.
Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, and make driving conditions hazardous.
The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management advises that as storms approach you should:
- Take shelter, preferably indoors away from windows;
- Avoid sheltering under trees, if outside;
- Move cars under cover or away from trees;
- Secure any loose objects around your property;
- Check that drains and gutters are clear;
- Be ready to slow down or stop, if driving.
During and after the storm, you should also:
- Beware of fallen trees and power lines;
- Avoid streams and drains as you may be swept away in flash flooding.
This warning is due to be updated or lifted by 03:37 pm Tuesday 18 October 2011.
NOTE: Only severe thunderstorm tracks are shown in the graphic. Other thunderstorms may exist in the area.

MEDIA PLEASE NOTE: This warning will be updated within the next hour or so. MetService would appreciate it being broadcast regularly during this period.
WWLN nor by Boltek is picking any strikes down that way which is odd, may be just be a very heavy shower with hail.....

Maybe a few could stike the astrolabe reef and start a decent oil blaze

Thunder here again in the last hour, spectacular lightning and small hail. Quite unusual for us at this hou,r as most of the storm events I have experienced in the Bay are mid to late afternoon. Not complaining though and it looks promising for tomorrow as well.
