Re: General November Weather
NW max gust of just over 114km/h here in Carterton in the Wairarapa. Interesting to see MS only have a Severe Weather Watch out and not a Warning.... What is the criteria for a Strong Wind Warning? Average wind speed last 10 mins in excess of 75km/h.

Re: General November Weather
Just got home from work, was snowing for a solid 15 mins at around 10.30 to 10.45 at sea level just outside Invercargill.
Never thought I'd see " possible blizzards." in the forecast for Invercargill.

Re: General November Weather
Two brief belts of rain at work second lot the heaviest around 11am with sleet mixed in, this is at about 180m asl so must be snowing down to atleast 250m through the foothills.
Looking quite unstable to the south and SW now different shade of black more a thundery green black with TCU, looks like a storm around Rakaia near the coast with purple on the radar there.
Keep watch .

Re: General November Weather
Partly to mostly cloudy here this afternoon. Temps around high teens
It has come that time of the year where birds start nesting and decide to poo everywhere they see fit, a weather station owners worst nightmare.
Just has to clear the gauge when I just cleared it 2 days ago

The first year here, I wondered why my readings were a bit high. When I went to my Stevensons Screen and found that there was a bird's nest in there around my sensor.Tornado Tim wrote: It has come that time of the year where birds start nesting and decide to poo everywhere they see fit, a weather station owners worst nightmare.
Haven't had that problem recently.

I've yet to see any. It must have been brief because I went out for a look after reading your post and there was nothing. Decent falls happening around Gore according to a poster on TM.mattyj46 wrote:Snowing again in Invercargill.

Re: General November Weather
According to MS's 'Weather Warning Criteria', Severe Gale Warnings are issued within 24 hours of minimum mean-winds exceeding 90 km/h, or frequent gusts exceeding 110 km/h, over an area of 1000 sq km or more (Severe Weather Watchs are normally issued more than 24 hrs out).Yesterday Shepherds Valley WX wrote:NW max gust of just over 114km/h here in Carterton in the Wairarapa. Castlepoint, which was included in their Coastal Gale Warnings, had gusts to 139 km/h late yesterday (131 km/h at Cape Turnagain).
I see that 'Windy Wgtn's' reputation over the last couple of weeks remains intact, with 98-122 km/h gusts at Kelburn over the last 3 days (and 104-109 km/h between the 24th and 26th).

Re: General November Weather
The irony is that most of October had very little wind - and it was a drab cloudy damp month. A "typical" October would have been greatly preferred. Now we're seeing more sun, so I regard the wind as a transitional phase to something better - I hope. For me the start of November has been much better than the October clag. We do however need quite a lot of sunshine in the remainder of the year to avoid getting 2 years in a row with a signficant deficit for the first time since 1992-93 - making the current situation seem more extreme than it really is.Nev wrote:I see that 'Windy Wgtn's' reputation over the last couple of weeks remains intact, with 98-122 km/h gusts at Kelburn over the last 3 days (and 104-109 km/h between the 24th and 26th).

Re: General November Weather
I see Christchurch Airport is showing a min of 1C for the last couple of mornings, perhaps some frost damage down there, can take a few days to show up.
Certainly feeling the cooler air here now with below average temps, low of 8C this morning and currently a cool 15C, dewpoints below 10C, cooler air mass is on the way out.

Re: General November Weather
Is that including this morning? I only got up at 9am, that was because of the heat of the sun coming through the blinds. Must have warmed up very quickly. I see the low at Jeffs was 4.7.

Re: General November Weather
Looks like the flow will be NE tomorrow in Christchurch with the warmer NW coming in Monday night. So a timing issue.I hope they change it on their updates this morning because I suspect it will be much warmer than that.

Re: General November Weather
That is true, although I would have thought it would still be somewhat warmer than just 20 even with a NE flow - all depends on how strong the breeze is. Guess will see. Anyways its 22 at the airport at the moment with a 25km/h easterly. Reached 24 locally over an hour ago, around 22 here now as well. Some CU about, some bubbling - will post a picture later. Clouds above are moving from SW direction with NE at ground level. Still 75-80% blue skies at the moment with plenty of sunshine but a dark cloud above at the moment with perhaps a shower from daytime heating.NZstorm wrote:Looks like the flow will be NE tomorrow in Christchurch with the warmer NW coming in Monday night.
