Overnight low of 17 here. 18.7 currently at the airport with variable winds. Extensive thick high cloud out there so will probably stop us from getting to 30.

Given the upper air is not particularly cold over Canterbury today I would expect the warm dry NW to kill any chance of thunder there today but as MetService has a mod risk today I will watch with interest, their model infomation will be considerably better than anything we have access to.

Looks like it will be early December before we get the next round of storms, a ridge heading in this week but then leaving around Saturday next week.

Yup, you can see the NW arch which isnt too far off, thick high cloud ofcourse is stubborn. Im thinking if the sun can win the battle by no later than 1130am then 30 is perhaps still on the cards - it really depends if enough heating can occur before the change.

1030am: Here is the sun now with the high cloud clearing. Expect to see the temperature rise considerably in the next half hour or so.
1130am: High cloud has moved back in again and thickened again. Reached 25 at the airport and 27.8 at Jeffs.

Perahps the Hanmer Springs site that MS monitors isn't the most reliable. NIWA do have a forestry site just a couple of kms ESE of the town, which usually reads a little less; it only recorded 28.8C yesterday. Other NIWA sites that were around 29C yesterday included Cheviot, Snowdon, Methven and Waipara W.

HoonHay: 29.7
Westmorland: 28.8
Lyttelton: 28.3
Diamond harbour: 28.0
St Albans: 27.9
Sumner 27.9

Interesting to see Timaru currently on 27.4C while Oamaru is on 12.8C, a classic east coast southerly change there.

Auckland currently cloudy 23C, dewpoint is 16C giving a rather humid feel to the day.

Yes, I see the southerly has hit Ashburton gusting 70km.h and down to 16.1 there currently. 28 at the airport here still, almost nudged 30 locally with 29.7. Some cloud buildups to the south but its actually the clearest the skies have been all day atm.

Another advantage of the new radars - you can see the showers cells actually develop as it is doing so in Inland South Canterbury at the moment.

I dont know why metservice take there Tempertures for Fairlie out at Kimbell which is 10-15km west of Fairlie, tempertures are usually diffrent out there. It was much hotter than 27 in town. Stevenson screen at the high school recorded 30.1. and I recorded 31.

Gusty southerly though here around 4pm, Some weak Cu around but nothing overly interesting, low cloud coming from the east now.

You can also see the southerly wind change as a 'fine-line' moving across the Plains, with the showers developing behind it...

Yes there are some funny quite black looking clouds about at the moment.

Southerly has just hit here (4:50pm)
Dropped 14 degrees in 20 minutes!

Change as it came over the city, high based. Looked like some resonable showers around Rakaia then moving off around Taumutu.

On to the next possibility!

The westerly has seemed to kill activity ahead of the change but looking inbehind it theres deep showers with some red/purple moving across between Timaru and Rolleston even as of latly so i wouldnt rule out something as the air flow freshens and the humidity goes back up.
The radar weather watcher showed before is what i am talking about, the line wind change ahead goes through with no shower or thunder activity but it develops in behind it.

Yes, but MetSetrvice are not very good for Canterbury with their thunderstorm forecasts.
NW against a SW is a no no
I like the word 'heavy' being a thunderstorm without thunder in my books.
When they say that, I just expect a few spits of drizzle.
...but then they have cover their bottoms <3

I see the NW flow was moist, Chch dewpoint was 12C with the northwester this afternoon, the dewpoint has dropped with the wind change. often there is a dewpoint rise with the southerly change
