Some sferics this afternoon and few more now possibly from those clouds to the SW or NE.
Interesting, nothing in TC, all around it in the projections from westwards, today.

Steve (03storm) is out near birdlings flat now so should be able to get a picture of that squall line that developed in the Rangitata Gorge (TS corner) and then moved NE offshore, it's all moving quite fast but he should be able to get some pics. The direction of the lightning from Steven G's tracker looks to be the one that formed over the Peninsula around 3.30 or 4pm, but quite quick in it's movement once again and is now offshore. Looks to of been another smaller squall that came out of TS corner around 2pm that moved in the same sort've line as the more recent and powerfull one.

All in all does indeed look better today indeed NZstorm and 03 for some nics pics! Hopefully as that trough moves up around 11pm or midnight there might be something but maybe it might pass too far east.

Very isolated and moving fast as you say aaron, that one missed us went around with some good shafting going on.
Sure as eggs it gets offshore into pegasus bay and its active, just heard a dumping groan not long ago from that direction.
Interesting afternoon none the less, i took a photo of TCU that wasnt capping over from the strong westerly like some of the others ill post below its from my phone taken earlier this afternoon.
Suns out now blue sky all around.

Seems we already had this thread for today's thunder, so I've added today's T-storms reports from the General thread. :D

Great pictures, Weetbicks.
A great bank of dark cloud to our south and southeast; otherwise, earlier overcast has cleared.
But awf'ly cold at 5.7 degrees and still the fresh to strong breeze from the west to southwest.

My father said there'd been a shower with brief hail late this afternoon near Akaroa, but didn't mention thunder.

Went out to Birdlings Flat saw the squall line head up the coast:
Birdlings.jpg
Then headed up to the top of the Hill on the road to Akaroa to watch it head over BP, wasn't alot to see from the top other than it was very gusting, didn't have my anemometer with me but based on previous experience I would say it was close to topping 100kmph.

But on the downside I've found my camera has a problem focusing

Was an interesting day indeed!
was getting unstable from about 1pm onwards but none of the cells to me looked very 'thundery' thats just how i saw it anyways.
Was working out at rolleston today so could see a wide angle of the clouds and south. looked very much like wintry CBs/ hail showers particuly the photos that weetbix put up!

cheers

There were thunderstorms reported at 8am this morning over BP and 3 claps of thunder were reported from Motokorara. Snow flakes in Akaroa (Hinawai this morning)
Anyway, here are some photos from from yesterday.
This mornings ones I'll put on later.
I think I might need a new camera :(

Lots of hail and some snow around Akaroa early this morning; on news photo near Hilltop it's mentioned as snow, but looks more like hail. (ie settling on ground and road, but not shrubs and trees)
