Darn, Lightning plots in the wrong place. Naff all visible from Edgecumbe, it's obviously out past Murupara towards Taupo at a guess.

Doh, I don't have my mobile internet dongle, it's on loan and I haven't got it back yet.

Using the 100 Meg a month on my smart phone with it hosting the Netbook via wireless. Looking at Metservice I can see why I'm in the wrong place.

Question... Why is the plot of the lightning so far out? Ricky, any reasoning.

Not that it matters, I couldn't have got down to Wairakei in the timeframe in any case.

Wow I've finally finished my day and have a chance to look at the sky. Such amazing boil ups all along the SW sky. Best I've seen in years.

Can see distant cb tops from here. The convection is pretty much firing along the convergence zone that we could see on the gfs. About a 3 to 4 hour drive from Auckland, thats why I didn't chase.

i actually think it is building this way slowly. Could get some nice night time lightning at dusk. If i didnt have that darn 4pm meeting i could have gone out and still be chasing right now. Oh well cant have them all i suppose.

PS that ghigh res radar from metservice is FANTASTIC!!!!! \:D/ =D>

Hopefully we can get some decent set ups in the Waikato between now and Xams.

Snippet from MetService's 4:54pm Severe Thunderstorm Watch ...
The main area of deep convection with thunderstorms is becoming concentrated in central Bay of Plenty with the threat area extending into eastern parts of Waikato.

There are isolated SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS within this area which, due to their slow motions, are generating local downpours (30-40mm/hr) and occasionally large hail (up to about 20-25mm). ...

These type of set ups with upper flow can produce golf balls but unfortunately theres not much upper flow there today. I like to see 40kts for big hail. There was a report on trade me of marble hail which is about 15mm I guess.

Hi folks,

Our radar hail sizing routine has been indicating generally 12 to 18mm hail but up to 24mm in one or two places (like the storm currently north of Rotorua. BOP regional council guage south of Rotorua city recorded 43mm in one hour when a big cell went past there a couple of hours ago.

It will fizzle quickly towards dusk as the heating is lost.

cause its a convergence (SE wind against SW wind), and the SE push is winning more, now, the line should last maybe a bit longer compared to just being heat driven...thoughts?
(this is just going on how these have panned out in the past)
although its not a proper incoming SE change,,...those can even reach this far north...after nightfall even...

Conditions are easing now. just one noteable storm just south of Tauranga moving nw. Cold temperatures aloft are moving out over the BOP and so the activity won't last much longer.
