Re: General December Weather
Looking like a tropical low could spoil holiday weather next week, perhaps a washout for Northland camping grounds before NewYear.
The Otago/SouthCanterbury lakes should be the best place to be for weather over the holiday period.

Re: General December Weather
Blue dome skies here with 19 degrees at the moment and little wind. A slight NE at times. Not a bad start in comparison to this December. A real lack of NW and a prolonged period without a NW day it seems. Off to Kaiteriteri on Boxing Day and the high looks to hang around until at least the 28th so that should make for very warm weather is the bay area there with no wind and beaming sunshine - trademark! Will be nice change! Cyclone Fina remains (ex-tropical cyclone no doubt come then) look as though they may touch Northland around new years eve or perhaps a little earlier but a long way out.

Re: General December Weather
Latest GFS is showing a slow moving area of heavy rain in a week's time. Of course that could change a lot given it is 7 days away

A mildish morning at 11.9 degrees, cooling a little in the last half-hour with the "mist rolling in from the sea". I expect when it clears again it will be a nice day. 83% humidity at present.

I then see on the MS site that nearby Culverden is on 7 deg, which is why i'm specious any of the recordings shown from that site.

Both GFS and ECMRF are in agreement regarding next weeks subtropical low. Looks like an active warm front could become slow moving over northern areas. The high pressure to our east will stall the front.
Showers and 15C to start the day in Auckland.

Yes rain looks possible over much of NZ before the end of the year with heavy falls in places.
Milford Sound might be the place to go to escape the rain .

I hope for sunny days here to the 29th. If today through to then can average over 11 hours per day -feasible - then the month's deficit (if 30 & 31 are overcast) will be "only" about 40 hours.spwill wrote:Yes rain looks possible over much of NZ before the end of the year with heavy falls in places.

Re: General December Weather
ECMWF still showing it coming down over the NI but GFS has it staying north of NZ now. My guess is that ECMWF is right and GFS will come back into agreement eventually.NZstorm wrote:Both GFS and ECMRF are in agreement regarding next weeks subtropical low. Re: General December Weather
GFS latest still plotting this low to track around the NI. It certainly accompanies some very heavy rain, however, it looks like the low is too far west of the NI so the heavy stuff is missing the north and will fall in the Tasman. The high out to the east looks responsible for that.

Wanaka Aero's max-temp yesterday was 28.5C and has been over 27C (more than 5C above normal) for the last 4 days. With 28C also expected today and tomorrow, I'd say that constitutes a modest Dec 'heat-wave'.

Re: General December Weather
Latest GFS model run showing the low to have some impact around the Nelson area again. I am up there for 2 weeks from tomorrow in Kaiteriteri. Will report on anything of substance. Lovely day here in CHCH. NE breeze keeping it from being too warm.

Re: General December Weather
Have you other Auckland guys noticed the real lack of summer temperatures this month? Even on a fine day we are lucky if the temperature reaches 23ºC. Yet to record a 25ºC day in Howick....
Re: General December Weather
We've had 26°C on the 9th. But otherwise the temo has been low twenties, which i like

Re: General December Weather
The persistent high cell out to our east has been dredging up cooler air from the south keeping northern areas in a cooler, cloudier pattern flow.Have you other Auckland guys noticed the real lack of summer temperatures this month?
Looks like we may get a warm up later next week with the subtropical low but it brings rain as well.
