Marlborough Canterbury heavy rain event 6/7 Dec
Just thought this one is worth its own thread now. Looks to be some risk of serious flooding in kaikoura and North C
Canterbury.
Hasn't arrived here in Christchurch yet, but the odd light show and very heavy overcast so far. Radar looks interesting

Re: Marlborough Canterbury heavy rain event 6/7 Dec
Good idea starting a thread for this event Razor as its shaping up to be rather serous rain event, the MS warning of up to 25mm per hour would i imagine at that rate could be accompanied by thunder and lightning maybe.....hopefully
Well the rain started about 10 mins ago and has only began to fall rather heavily along with no wind

0.5mm from on and off patchy drizzle (mainly off). Crap sort of a day with nothing doing so far.

Some nice red blobbs appearing on the radar at the moment. Should be interesting to see what totals some areas get come morning.
edit: Wonderful, the radar isnt updating now...

The radar is brilliant, shows the impact that Banks Peninsula is having as the band moves in. Rain getting heavier here in Riccarton now

Re: Marlborough Canterbury heavy rain event 6/7 Dec
there will also be the fact that the high ground of banks peninsula will be blocking the rain radar signal
you can see that by the way the rain does not look as heavy behind it...
yes?
(although the relatively large distance away from the rain radar does mitigate the terain blocking effects to a degree, i.e the relatively low angles involved and the fact the curvature of the earth means not as much of the port hills are sticking up that far away (can you see the port hills from Raikia very well?))

Brief decent rain here. 2mm tops from it now back to misty stuff. Nothing exciting as yet.

Re: Marlborough Canterbury heavy rain event 6/7 Dec
I don't think its blocking the signal at all, it genuinely is petering out over the southern suburbs of ChCh by comparison to Rangiora and beyond, intensity appears to be lost even before it makes landfall over the peninsula for some reason.Manukau heads obs wrote:there will also be the fact that the high ground of banks peninsula will be blocking the rain radar signal

Re: Marlborough Canterbury heavy rain event 6/7 Dec
Heavy rain at times here big drops mixed in, and 9mm so far it had been drizzly prior to the band coming down but nothing more than 1mm from that.
The maps show it will last overnight until about late morning tomorrow, but the radar suggests the band could only be brief unless its stalling over us.

Re: Marlborough Canterbury heavy rain event 6/7 Dec
Yes the main band appears quite fast moving and its also starting to break up?
Unless it swings direction it looks like it will ease this evening
Been watching steady rain outside the window of the Riccarton office for the last hour, large drops for sure but not especially heavy so far

It must be swinging around, latest GFS just through has it stalling over us for another 12 hours and appears to be further south than forecast. ie.Christchurch to Cheviot or so.

Re: Marlborough Canterbury heavy rain event 6/7 Dec
Interesting with this is that the fact that the rain is moving in to a complete constrast to the surface wind flow.
It's been West to SW all day here with constant drizzle and now that the rain is moving in from the east to SE, the WSW is still blowing although lessoned a bit.
The snow events in July and August were a bit like this?
