Some thunderstorms currently over the hill country just north of Dunedin, rugged country through there and it catches the NE moisture.

Significant seabreeze convergence over southern parts of Auckland. Light shower in Papakura from stunning cloud formation. Quickly forming over Auckland Airport area now.

There will be quite a variation in sunshine hrs across the Auckland region this December with all this seabreeze convergence of late.

Not the 20-22 of Dec but there were some good Cbs South of Timaru today, One looked down around Oamaru way and the other just west of St Andrews.

Thunderstorm Corner seems to have something brewing, going by radar and lightning detector activity.

Continuous sunshine here this afternoon but I did notice the dark clouds to the SW. Pity there isn't more instability todayArea51 wrote:Significant seabreeze convergence over southern parts of Auckland. Light shower in Papakura from stunning cloud formation. Re: Thunder across NZ - Dec 20-25
A little bit unstable in christchurch tonight and particuly inland Canterbury! nice build ups
Seems as though scrappy/broken parts have come over the city above some low NE sea cloud.
Might have to put up with the thunder under ground here for awhile unless something amazing actually happens during the next few days..

Merry Christmas forumer's! Could be one of the better days for these inland buildups later this afternoon, at this stage behind Ashburton and in a line through to the hunter hills / Omarama? Areas of convergence perhaps a little closer to the east this time.
Will have xmas lunch and everything here, if it looks good may head out late afternoon.

Met Service have a high risk inland with moderate risk of severe thunderstorms , interesting in these situations how a high risk stops with nothing east of the foothills not even a low risk.
I think given the scatterd CU last night that spread east there might be some activity pushing to the coast later on, maybe not thundery but heavy showers/hail none the less.

Inland from Timaru (Hunter Hills/Farlie) looks to be the spot today as Aaron suggested.

Merry Christmas all! It is a lovely fine day in Twizel. There was some high cloud this morning but it has gone now but a few big puffy ones remain. A hot day is brewing and there is no breeze to speak of. Have a good day and eat lots of nice food!

Good Cu going up to the south and NW of here towards Mt dobson.
23 degrees currently with a dew point of 14, So good numbers for storm development. Things should really start to fire up once the easterly arrives.

Re: Thunder across NZ - Dec 20-25
decided i would take my camera out today and take a few photos as i knew there would be something to capture! Most of the storms are inland but a couple are what looks to be wrapping around to the south, might be good for some lightning tonight

Re: Thunder across NZ - Dec 20-25
Arghh, I would like to head out but feel a bit guilty leaving the family. Hmm, I might be too late now as these anvil heads might kill any new convection that wants to form. If I go out soon would be better to get stuff more to the W/NW (so would be a shorter drive which is good). I've taken some photo's but yeah..... spose there will always be other storms. Wish I could've got some nice wide pics of those Cb's to the south as they were going up and just glaciating, nice photographs they would have been.
Nice pics snowstormwatcher, on the southern side is better to view them if you can.

Good thunderstorm North of here now. Just been out for a look and seen some good lightning. Hopefully it drifts closer to town.

Re: Thunder across NZ - Dec 20-25
Had Christmas dinner in the Ruapuna area today; thunder began about 2pm from the Mt Peel direction & was quite rowdy and frequent for an hour or so. We moved indoors eventually & there was a shower about 3.30pm, then bigger rain-spots as we left around 4.30pm. Still very light rain now at Mayfield. Happy Christmas, all
