What were the biggest weather events of 2011 ?
Some that come to mind are,

2, Nelson floods, December
3, Rare snow for Wellington and Auckland mid August.

Yes the heavy snowfalls of July and August will not be forgotten, first time in a long time we have had not only 2 sgnificant snow events in one season but also the deepest was the August 15/16th with 20cm beating all the other snowfalls this decade but behind 1992 .
We havnt really had any thunderstorms this year, there were storms on 14th August before the blast took hold but they were weak wintry CB's that by passed here.
The Nelson floods and Albany tornado are the others that would stick in my head.
Other than that its been a year dominated by seismic activity and days we will have etched in our minds forever.

Certainly in the cost of damage from a weather event it would have to be Nelson,i dont think Cyclone Wilma was as damaging was it?. Yes the snowfalls in Canterbury were substantial but they are becoming more common so to me i dont really think they stand out as a rare event, snow in and around Auckland, yes, thats different.

30cm of snow in town twice in the space of a couple of weeks...thats not at all a normal of common chain of events. Just about once in a lifetime I would suggest. if not for the CBD already being Red Zone it would have been a deal breaker for most folk here in terms of biggest event
Dead heat with the Nelson floods for my mind

Two snowfalls is uncommon but snowfall in general to sea level in the CHCH area is becoming more common

Re: Biggest weather events of 2011
It would be interesting to have some stats for this because my feeling is snow has become more common in the Chch area over the past decade and less common for the Dunedin area.Richard wrote:Two snowfalls is uncommon but snowfall in general to sea level in the CHCH area is becoming more common

Re: Biggest weather events of 2011
A lot of the snow events of recent years have largely missed Dunedin,Otago and Sth Canterbury and hit areas from about Ashburton northwards.
Its been a pretty uneventfall year here weather wise with not much snow or severe weather.

Re: Biggest weather events of 2011
would have to be the snow in Hamilton which i got to see the snow shower come over Mt Pirongia, then i drove through the snow shower as it come over hamilton. That day i also got a glimpse of Mt Pirongia (for a few minutes that the cloud cleared) covered from top to bottom in white.
My other big event wasnt really an event just an amazing run of weather. It was July 5th - July 15th. For 10 days running we had rain in a NW flow. The lowest was 3.4mm for 9am-9am and the heighest was 19.4mm. Not huge numbers i know but it added up to being 119mm over 10 days. The ground never had a chance to dry out and this was after an already wet June. No one had ever seen the area so wet before.

Re: Biggest weather events of 2011
Maybe the Waikanai (Kapiti Coast) thunderstorm July 9 deserves a mention given it produced 3cm + hail stones and an F1 tornado. A good example of a winter supercell.

Also the 19th of September Thunderstorm event that northland got. High lightning strike rates when that came along.
