Subtropical Low - Dec 29 2011 - Jan 1 2012
It is looking very likely many places are going to get a soak from this low. Its a shame it will be over new years and hit favourite camping areas the hardest. I would think there will definitely be some disruption caused from this low. It looks like it leaves a lot of moisture for some storms on Sunday providing daytime heating gets cranking. We will just have to wait to see how it all plays out.

Some of our most popular holiday regions are in the firing line from this system. Camping grounds will be full from Northland to Bay of Plenty and across the Nelson/ Marlborough region.
It is going to be a very wet December for Nelson, Nelson Airport has had 366mm so far this December.

One has to go back to 1876 to find a higher total in any month in the Nelson City area. Even the all-time record of 504mm might be under threat.spwill wrote:Some of our most popular holiday regions are in the firing line from this system. the first band of rain has mainly stayed offshore, to the west, from the upper NI, as it spiralled around the low center

Looks moist and unstable from tomorrow through to Monday for the North Island.
GFS plots the heaviest precip down the west of the North Island over the next few days.
I agree with Jamie, Sunday looks like the best possible thunder day atm with convergence over the inland NI and clearer skies to allow heating.
GFS QPF chart next 96hrs. Don't know if this will prove accurate though.

26mm here. Looks like more rain coming down later today.
If there is some heating this afternoon then may see isolated thunderstorm pop up. But the chances of heating today don't look good.
Saturday's thunderstorm chances look very good over upper half of North Island.

I see the low center is doing a loop da loop
when it loops around a bit closer again that could bring in fresh rain bands
I see there has been lots of rain over the southern NI due to a convergence..sort of frontal graveyard....the N running into the SE change
