Waiheke Island is very popular this time of year Nev,the holiday makers won't be enjoying this weather. I think we have to go back to summer of Cyclone Fergus in 1996 for such a poor run of holiday weather for the Auckland region.

Warm and damp this morning , dewpoint of 19C. Any brightning of our weather today would quickly lift the temperature.

43mm in Laingholm so far
41mm here now too

obviously more rain forming over the land than over the gulf (e.g Waiheke island getting only half the amount)

12Z GFS suggests a trough will come down from the NW and brush the west of the North Island later today, hitting Taranaki. You could get some heavy stuff from that Brian.

Up to 152mm now here in Kaiteriteri after checking in with the owner at the office. He believes 38mm fell in one hour last night. It was unbelievable. Out we were digging trenches. Rain not as heavy today with some drizzly spells but moderate rain has been falling for last 2 hours or so again. Perhaps hitting 200mm before this is done.

there was a very heavy shower, torrrential in fact , right on the coast here, at around 1pm

rain radar does show a heavy area of rain to the NW, and its lightning active too

It's brightened right up in Glenfield, but we've had some torrential downpours. 59mm since this time yesterday and a steady 99% humidity. The dew point has sat pretty consistently at just 0.2 degrees below the air temp. Currently 23.0 against an air temp of 23.2.

Tomorrow the upper air isnt that cold at all when you compare to a normal summer thunderstorm day at -17°C but its only expected to be around -11°C @ 500mb.
However, the middle layers and SFC layers are saturated and this can play in the favor of some developing storms as it has the fuel and its on trough of low pressure.
But there is a negative to this, lots of mid level moisture means more cloud......... more cloud= less DTSH, less DTSH = lower lapse rates = low probability of lightning.
Hopefully the sky will be less than 4 octas otherwise it seems the setup will be just some tropical downpours.

Overcast atm with 16.6mm of Rain since midnight, convective showers are around.... hardly surprising being in 21°C DP environment ;)

Is it just me, or has the rain radar network stopped updating?

It has gone very dark here just now - looks like it's about to pour

I think convergence is also the key for tomorrows thunder chances. We need to see the flow get a bit onshore along the west coast to converge with the NE. I think at least isolated thunderstorms will develop in the afternoon. The upper cloud layers reduce tomorrow afternoon but there will still be lots of lower cloud and showers.

I wouldn't rule out isolated elevated thunder overnight. Maybe Coromandal is the best spot.

Just 10mm here but rainfall much needed even though the fire risk is still fairly low.
Some more showers come new years day maybe a thunderstorm or two inland to watch for.
