Re: General January Weather
Sattelitte pictures don't show much. Sometimes there are clear shots of NZ and lots of places are covered with low cloud. Mind you it's a cloudless sky at the moment although a little hazy with a fresh ENE blowing here

Re: General January Weather
Just had a heavy shower here out of a narrow cloud line after a mostly fine warm day, max 25C, dewpoint 17C. I like days like this, won't need to water the lawn now.

Re: General January Weather
Missed that shower here.
A shot of very warm air comes across the country from tomorrow. Dunedin Airport should top 30C with isolated big NW gusts 60kts possible.
The warm air should give a very hot day over eastern North Island Wednesday.

Re: General January Weather
most likely a strong inversion layer (with the NW flow) which causes ghosting

Re: General January Weather
24C, dewpoint 16C for Auckland this afternoon. some suburbs having a sunny day while others have plenty of cloud.
A poor January for Auckland with sunshine well down , the cloud cover helping keep temperatures cooler than normal also there has been a lack of airflow from warm origins. i don't think there has been much in the way of warm air from inland Australia reaching NZ this January.

Re: General January Weather
another hot day here compared to what the rest of Jan was like
Jan will end up being 1.5 C colder than normal for me
February looks like it will be warmer than normal, at least for the 1st week!
ps, bit a of a weak convergence shower line over the waitakere ranges

Re: General January Weather
25 degrees now but still thick high cloud. No wind all day really with an average speed of 2km/h. You can tell though that had the sun been out it would be HOT! Its very tropical out there, even a few spots of rain again before with the temp on 24 at that point.

Re: General January Weather
Boring 'ole weather here in Nelson all January, I think we got about 14mm of rain and goodness knows how much sun. Though it was a nice change after a 400mm+ December!
My February is bound to be a lot more exciting though as I am moving to Wellywood on Friday.

Re: General January Weather
A very interesting day with the arch sticking overhead, but lots of Mamatus forms and brief heavy bursts of rain especially around 1pm when a long thunder rumble appeared out of nowhere.
Yes i know strange i thought it was a plane at first but no it definatly rolled and did the cannon dumping sound.
None of these gale winds here all day infact even inland at work only the odd puff around 35kmh, Remained reasonably warm even without the sun on 23C so i can imagine we could have very well hit something like 33C today.

Re: General January Weather
Another poor forecast from metservice again ended up 6C below forecast high in chch and 9C below in ashburton even had heavy rain for a while with a little thunder as well but none of this was in there forecast and the gusty NW was not to be seen.
Think its about time there funding was like the SPARK sports funding- dont perform then give it to someone else to have a go. Computers just arnt a forecast tool to place so much reliance on in my mind.

Re: General January Weather
Ah ..well Yes, sometimes the forcasted maximums do match. Maybe, the maximum for today was dependent on cloud clearance but then it didn't happen. At work today, someone mentioned that it could get up to 27C. I said no, it would only get up to 19C because of the thick NW cloud cover. It was 23C here.

Re: General January Weather
Looks like the thunderstorm has come out of an orographic wave. The upper level lapse rates are steep and when moisture and lift are added, high level cb's develop.n ashburton even had heavy rain for a while with a little thunder
There were elevated thunderstorms over the South Tasman/Fiordland earlier in the day associated with the warm front.

A breeze out there now, perhaps the strongest of the day at around 20km/h and has shot up from 20 to 23 degrees.

Re: General January Weather
Interesting this morning, it was windy from the NW here from 6am, but when I got to work at Halswell, there was no wind at all and throughout the day there was bugger all wind at all?
if any wind, it was from the NE.
