Re: General January Weather
I doubt that, it just developed this afternoon. The dynamics for it however I would agree with you on though.Manukau heads obs wrote:left over junky stuff that has originaly come from CB's over the westeran tasman or eastern australia I suspect

Re: General January Weather
Interesting photos Tim, elevated convection is something new to me, especially considering the storm that was on the plains here the other day. Need to learn more.

Around Halswell, later this morning there was a strong sea smell, like you get around the Kaikoura coast.
Did anyone around the Halswell area smell it?

Re: General January Weather
No rain or showers here so far today. Radar shows there has been some nice heavy stuff just a little further south. Its seems to be moving west to east the bands at the moment. Could do with 10-15mm today with very brown grass about.

Re: General January Weather
Another cool January day for Auckland with the thermometer struggling to get 20C. Unless we get a warm up to finish the month, we could be significantly cooler than average. Not what I expected with la Nina.
Tomorrow looks fine but cool with 850mb temp 5C.

yes, I posted just the other day we are running 1.3C colder than normal here so far for JanAnother cool January day for Auckland with the thermometer struggling to get 20C. Unless we get a warm up to finish the month, we could be significantly cooler than average. Not what I expected with la Nina.
I have only reached 18.2C here today due to the heavy overcast and patchy rain/drizzle
amazing for what should be around the hottest part of the year
maybe February will make up for it

Re: General January Weather
Wellington has been somewhat short-changed with both La Nina surges this time - last summer and this one - last summer was down on sunshine, and this one will be the same unless February makes up for December (should be near average for January). Nothing like 1988/89 or 1964/65. However NIWA should remind people that the variability is great - "summer" 1975/76 (dry and sunny in Southland, Otago and some of the SI hinterland but cold everywhere, particularly in February as the price for dry and sunny conditions then) was near the end of a very long-running and often strong La Nina episode.NZstorm wrote:Another cool January day for Auckland with the thermometer struggling to get 20C. Natures air conditioning system is on full here today, humidity is gone and our temperature is not moving much above 20C despite the strong January sunshine.

Re: Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
Where has winter gone? werid how it feels like autumn out there, and yet we are only in middle of summer!!
Heavy showers and hail bom barded the roof last night and early hours, and i layed in bed thinking where is the lightning/thunder as we are in summer after all and not winter.
A cool start this morning to and fresh snow on the alps.
cheers

Re: General January Weather
Interesting to see all the high cloud rolling in this evening, where has it come from? I'm used to seeing it ahead of a front rather than from an anticyclone. Maybe we won't dip under 10C tonight as I first thought...

If only....Latest GFS has a low/cyclone forming in the top end of Australia, moving down through inland Queensland, popping out at Northern NSW,crossing the ditch and slamming into the South Island as a low.....interesting!

Re: General January Weather
was cold last night again. down to 4.3 thismorning which is certainly no Janurary record for me but still damn cold for summer. Hopefully the wind wont be quite as strong today and the temp can climb a bit higher. I do enjoy the lower DP. Means comfortable warmth and no clouds in the sky. I suppose we are getting a taste of southisland summer with this high.
