Re: General January Weather
Snowing in Ranfurly according to Trademe forum poster. Only 4C in Oamaru at midnight. Would've been high 20s today before the southerly hit.

Re: General January Weather
I can see snow on Mt Flagstaff above Dunedin. A light dusting down to about 550 metres. Flagstaff is about 650 metres high. None visible on Mt Cargil from my vantage point but it could have collected on the lee-ward side.
It impresses me that we went from a 23 degree mid-summer's afternoon to a snowy late-autumn night.

Re: General January Weather
It has snowed here overnight at some stage: a dusting of snowflakes on ferns, grass, car, roof.
Presently 1.5 degrees, cloud overhead but bright horizon to south and east.
I daresay the hills will look impressive when I get outside to look at 'em.
[13.8 degr. indoors - I've now lit the fire!]

Re: General January Weather
Fine now in Chch, with only scattered clouds, after a howling gale and rain last night. Must be at least 15C colder than this time yesterday. A Trademe poster even claimed to have seen some snow on the higher Port Hills early this morning. (maybe hail)

Re: General January Weather
Looking at the radar we'll be lucky to get 5mm. Been a dry month so we could use some decent rain soon.

Re: General January Weather
Another very cold snap indeed, i dont think ive seen snow that low in the height of summer before so very uncommon i would think .
I did watch the radar runs before i went to bed and the front was fair chugging it once it hit the plains around Oamaru, the gale southerly must have wipped it up well.
Its been a nice day though with scatterd CU development typical of afternoon heating and left over cold air, a shower did pop up around 2pm must have come from around Mt Thomas area and spilled N-NE weak but a CB shower none the less.
Back to a warm weekend before another NW set up early next week.

Re: General January Weather
The great stratocumulus maker (inversion/moisture/onshore wind) has set up camp over Auckland and could be with us for a while. I expect a cloudy end to the month here. Hopefully the cloud can burn back in the afternoons.
The upper level airmass over the country next week looks very warm, should lead to some hot weather in eastern places, more likely Gisborne/HB were the skies will be clearer than further south.

Re: General January Weather
There is a vineyard covered in snow in those ODT photos. I assume those grapes would have been ruined by the subzero temps.
