Fantastic news Steven, though you wouldn't think so at the moment with all this low cloud thats about the place, just hope it clearsNZstorm wrote:Rain on the way for the north this weekend. The heaviest rain will occur where the wind will be onshore, Coromandel, East Cape/ Gisborne/HB.
A big contrast between the upper level temperatures between North and South tomorrow. Auckland 500mb-10C, Christchurch -18C. The colder upper air over the South Island could lead to inland thunder.

Had 2.5mm over the last couple of hours or so from an isolated rouge cell that only appears to have had Waiheke's name on it ... weird. Bit of blue out there now.
24.6C here yesterday arvo btw during a few hours of sunshine and 1.5mm earlier in the morn.

More "spoiler" cloud on the western flanks down here - I fear another cloudy January is getting established.

Bloody magical weather this past week at Okarito, and then later at Karamea . One brief shower on Tuesday otherwise fine and hot weather the whole time. Summer is bright and hot and dry on the West Coast this year.

Milford Sound having some record dry and warmth in December, usually see a rain deluge in Dec for Milford. a good summer to walk the tracks.Summer is bright and hot and dry on the West Coast this year.
Clearing skies here and 20C here currently , Auckland temperature generally stuck in the 17C to 23C range of late and rather humid.

At the moment GFS has around 100mm for Auckland this weekend, seems a bit excessive.

There's a few cloud build up around the hills to the NW but i don't think there will mount to any showers though.
A lovely sunny warm summers day on 27deg and a southerly breeze.

I'm thinking the next week is looking good for inland storms with humid airflows from the NE quarter, surely us storm deprived mainlanders can get at some half descent storm before winter.

Re: General January Weather
Latest from metservice tonight:
Valid to: Midnight Saturday 7 Jan 2012
Issued at: 10:44pm Friday 6 Jan 2012
Cloud buildups are expected to produce scattered afternoon and evening showers over the central and southern North Island, and much of inland South Island on Saturday.
In the North Island, showers are expected from Taumarunui through the central high country to Manawatu and Wairarapa but thunderstorms are considered unlikely.
In the South Island, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop in many inland areas from Nelson and inland Marlborough, through inland Canterbury to northern and eastern Otago. The highest risk area for thunderstorms is about inland Nelson and Marlborough (especially around Nelson Lakes) during the afternoon and evening, but there is also a moderate risk about the ranges of North Canterbury in the afternoon, and about the MacKenzie Country and northern inland Otago in the evening. A lower risk of thunderstorms covers other inland South Island areas as indicated on the chart. Localised heavy rain and hail will accompany the thunderstorms. In the inland Nelson and Marlborough area, there is a low risk of SEVERE thunderstorms bringing downpours of 25 to 35mm per hour.

Re: General January Weather
Ok so i'm in the "Mod Risk" zone
Looking out to the sky at at first light this morning there's two patchy cloud layers, low cloud drifting in from the south and the mid level clouds only very slowly moving to the SE.
I have a dew point question for ya's,last evening at 8.00 i was doing a bit of work in the garden, walking through the corn there was heaps of dew forming on the leafs, had a look at the gauge and it was showing 21deg,so would dew point have been 21??

Re: General January Weather
The leaf surface will be cooling creating condensation, fog and 21C would indicate a dewpoint of 21C. The Chch Airport dewpoint was 13C-14C and the air will generally get drier as you go inland.Richard wrote: I have a dew point question for ya's,last evening at 8.00 i was doing a bit of work in the garden, walking through the corn there was heaps of dew forming on the leafs, had a look at the gauge and it was showing 21deg,so would dew point have been 21??
An overcast damp day ahead for us, hopefully a much better day tomorrow with the front to the south and a S/SE flow.

Raining here now with 17C, a cool wet day in store.
Tomorrow should be an okay day for Auckland with rising temperatures.

Re: General January Weather
Looks like we (jase, mike, aaron, myself) will be chasing the severe risk today, or as close as we can get giventhe road options are limited. Got both telecom and vodafone internet now so should be a big help.
