Unread post by Richard »

Its a good sign to see clouds building so early in the morning.

Will be interesting to see if the MS have any thunder storm risk warmings out for Canterbury today

Saw the clouds early this morn ing to the NW and thought a good chance of heavy showers this afternoon, as they were building to the east of the devide and close to the coast.
Very warm day it has been today, unfortunately working so no photos taken but am working out in rangiora outside at the moment so can see it all.
Nice heavy shower there around 3 30pm with big drops! would of skipped past the city Leighton.
Also reports from my sister whos up in hanmer atm ' lucky for sum" still on holiday.. she said thunderstorms up there this evening.
Fantastic photos to Richard good stuff! heres a link i just found on the hanmer webcam, move the browser from left to right to pick the hourly webcam pick ups, u can see the storm form and come over.
Hopefully iv copied and pasted it right. cheers

Should've left earlier then I did but got to the edge of that big storm over Richard, saw a few big Cg's and got them on video. Was great to hear some loud thunder and see lightning! Got to just north of Amberley. Richard sounds like he had it much better, I better get ready for work though so will post some pictures later.

Cheers

Humid and warm for much of the day watched CU build along the foothills all day with some lower cloud hanging about overhead developing, managed to see one cell as it headed east from behind Amberley.
Few showers from 3pm onwards with the odd heavy burst, but back at home dry as bone and only a few spots on the deck.
Simular set up tomorrow i would think, i do wonder if MS could have shifted the risk further south today on thier outlook and had a greater confidence.
Must check Friday too yesterday when i looked theres a reasonable SW set up coming in late afternoon which at this time of the year can always be interesting, however it might NW beforehand.

Only a very brief burst of heavy rain here, perhaps 30secs or so, sandwiched between 5-10mins of lighter stuff. Some good rumbles from about 2pm till 4pm, but most were distant.

I arrived on the scene just as the action was dying, Knew I should have left work earlier!
Got 2 days of possibly chasing ahead of me, Do I head south tomorrow or hang round to see what happens in North Canterbury then Thursday the west coast may just produce the goods.

Too late for me to think about seperate threads for this and that, and considering I said I'd put photo's into the photographs part of the forum, but I'm tired and will go to bed soon. Guess we'll all try to tidy it up a bit in future? Anyway... here's a few photos I took from today but nothing much really. Just to note I got a txt from Richard in Amuri, he says at 4pm. "Just had a massive storm, 47mm in 1 hour! But lightning hit our internet dish! Non stop thunder too!" Guess that solves the reason as to why he hasn't posted yet.

Had my SLR set on Auto for some unknown reason!!! Pictures didn't come out how I would like, grrr.

Created a new thread as looking over GFS this morning its looks like we could have storms Today, Tomorrow, Friday and Sunday. Tomorrow is looking esp good south of Ashburton, Li's dropping to -3, CAPE about 600, upper air isnt overly cold @ -17c 500mb, Shear isnt to shabby and surface winds look great. Only caution is high cloud cover, it will move in later in the day from early afternoon, and could be a killer. I tend to think metservice don't know what to forecast for tomorrow and are going light at this stage.

Nice photos Aaron and a good shot of the TCU steve! good to see.
Could see some big clouds about late morning when things started to heat up but not very strong looking.
Really need nice big cold trough come up from the south with an onshore NE sea breeze to really get a proper storm day!! But unfortunately with the stupid la nina pattern i dont see it happening in the near future :(
Interesting how alot of the south island gets a risk and Christchurch down to about Ashburton gets nothing on the coast.. perhaps its the cooling affect of the Stronger sea breeze?
