Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
Further to tomorrow's possibilities maybe metservice say the Blenhiem area as I always remember it, it can remain sunny in the Wairau Valley when a S or SW flow is over the country as the ranges to the south block cloud cover etc so better cape could be a result. They might have other reasons though.....

Re: Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
Well I tempted fate by painting two walls of my bedroom. So I figure if Murphy can, he will prevent the paint from drying sufficiently for me to apply another coat this afternoon. A bit cooler and overcast, still reasonably high humidity here, but nothing to write home about so far. Sadly no chance of anything I want to chase within striking range.

8C here currently with a bit of a shower moving across but I can see blue sky to the south so hopefully the sun will warm things up as this cloud moves away.

Re: Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
Yes a clearance to the south now which is good, this is the second cold front moving over trough further south.
A few heavy showers popping up over south canterbury so might be an interesting afternoon/evening just wondering if MS have factored out the plains because of the possible cloud.

Re: Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
I see the band has intensified north of CHCH so North Canterbury might see some heavy rain. Red blotches. A nice area of heavy shower activity off the coast of South Canterbury but seems to be drifting too far east. Blue sky to the south of here but the cloud above here is not clearing.
Update: An hour later and the sun is making an appearance
Update 2: Wind completely died out, very little to none now.

Re: Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
Most of the shower activity popping up is way out to sea. 3mm of rain from today thus far taking the annual total to 8mm.

Re: Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
Yeah, sadly it is. All moving in a SW/NE fashion. Some unstable Cu's going up here but a bit pathetic.
Wind went back to the NW for a while here after that higher layer moved away but now it was gone back SW.
Getting some sferics on the radio but it is probably that cell out to sea. It would be nice if it was night time.

Re: Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
Bright blue skies here now and up to 17 degrees after hovering around 9 for much the morning. Still very little wind about, a light NW before and now SSW averaging 4km/h. Another nice looking shower cell coming up but once again out to sea.

Re: Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
Thunderstorm with hail moved across here about 10 minutes ago.
Lightning mainly in the cloud from the flashes I saw.
I feel so happy

Re: Cold blast, Sunday 22nd January 2012
Just back from Rolleston area. Got under a good cell there where I decided to pull over as I couldnt see even driving at 10km/h was being hit by torrential rain with hail and some good flashes of lightening with thunder following, not loud cracking thunder but thunder none the less. Followed the edge of the cell back to home but couldnt stay under the core of it due to drivers on the main south road only able to drive at 30km/h due to the intensity of the rain. Heard a couple of rumbles and saw 2 flashes in the hornby area as well. Sun is back out here now with bubbling CU to the south of here.

Looking at the radar now, we may have another round or even 2 if we are lucky. Good that the sun is back out.

It would be nice especially when it gets a bit darker, but I don't think so.
