Some moisture coming down in advance of that trough. GFS indicates 20-21C dps for Northern areas Wednesday and Thursday! Should see embedded cb's in the front given the saturated lower levels. We'll see how the gfs looks tomorrow.

To 20th, exactly 100 hrs sunshine recorded at Ch'ch - no chance of the record low of 112 being beaten or closely approached. Wellington's total is 101.3 - a modest chance of beating the record (28-day) low of 140. Record summer low is still in contention.

Re: General February Weather
It was February 1966. Unlike this month, it was warmer than average over the whole country by from about 1.8C to 3.4C - by 2C at Christchurch, which had an average 48mm of rain, much of that on one day. Anticyclonic for the first half, unsettled for the rest. The second half was very cloudy almost everywhere, and the first half in Canty had enough high cloud and onshore cloudiness to not be all that great either. There was one 32C day in Christchurch. West Coast cloud throughout the month gave Haast just 70 hours, equal to the NZ low record for the month.Richard wrote:What year were those record low's Rupert.RWood wrote:To 20th, exactly 100 hrs sunshine recorded at Ch'ch - no chance of the record low of 112 being beaten or closely approached. Re: General February Weather
Max of 24 here today but felt warmer with the 19-20C dewpoint much of the day.
Hopefully we can get some proper rain for a change with this incoming system.

Re: General February Weather
Must've been some heavy rain in Chch this afternoon (only spitty rain on outer peninsula), as there were puddles and my washing was damp.

Re: General February Weather
This low pressure system coming in the next day or two is very warm like a subtropical low although its only forming in the mid Tasman! Good warm advection forecast to occur with it.
And have to watch for the possibility of squally thunderstorms over northern areas Thursday with the cold front.

Re: General February Weather
I see MS have a watch out for parts of Otago and Canterbury as well as Westland over night tonight,Tony did say they there was a chance a few days ago, so well done,40mm + would be great for farmers around here at this time of year.

Yes, one of those rare occasions where 24-hour stats to 9am won't truly reflect just how warm Akld's overnight minima was. Down to 19.7C here at 3:50am this morn.

Cooler here today, currently 18C, dewpoint 13C, looks like we keep this general cooler trend into next week with lowish dewpoints for the time of year over the NI.

Re: General February Weather
Quite a cool 16C here in Grey Lynn now. Feels like April!
The cold upper trough will keep temperatures down a bit for the North Island over the next 2 or 3 days by the looks. But should get lots of sun in Auckland.

Re: General February Weather
Yes rather cool temps atm, 12.2°C with a light WSW, Humidity is around 90%, so the temp shouldn't drop so much.
Of note on the 28th of Jan this year it got quite cold down here in the morning to 5.3°C, compare that to the low of Jan last year at 9.8°C.

...In the North Island, a converence zone is expected to form in the Bay of Plenty between easterly winds in eastern Bay of Plenty and west to northwest winds in the west. This convergene zone is likely to produce a few heavy showers with possible hail east of Matata this evening and overnight. A few thunderstorms are also possible offshore, and there is a low risk these may affect coastal areas as indicated on the chart. There is also the chance of waterspouts or funnel clouds offshore.

Re: General February Weather
Upper level (500mb) pattern looks very disturbed this week, looks more like an autumn pattern.
Looks like a decent upper trough over the North Island Tuesday with a thunder/hail risk if there is enough moisture?
Then a fast moving shortwave crosses the country from the SW, Wednesday into Thursday.
And then another very strong upper trough by the weekend.(deep surface low modeled for the north)

Re: General February Weather
I will keep on eye on Tues for a chase day in the BOP given how cold the upper air is in the modelling.
Sunny, fresh 22C here, SW breeze, dewpoint 13C. We get our humid weather back mid week.

Re: General February Weather
A SFC Dew point of at least 15°C is my rule of thumb for convective thunderstorms to occur. Anything below that will be quite fibrousy and wont carry a charge as well.
