Storm is just south of Auckland on radar. Still lightning active. Interesting to see the activity this time at night.
Re: Thunder possible this week starting 13th Feb

Re: Thunder possible this week starting 13th Feb
The upper trough crossed the area overnight which would have helped to trigger the nightime storms.

wow, it was spectacular from here...huge positive strokes from the top of the cloud out to the side all the way to the ground, big bolts out the bottom...excellent stuff
best CB in ages for night time around here
thunder was great too, it was about 7km SE of me by counting ....must have been around the glenbrook, clarks beach area

Yes, best nightime lightning show I have seen in a while.
Strongest convergence today will be down the spine of the North Island from Kaimai to Taihape. I will see what develops around Auckland today but I think I will go for drive into eastern Waikato later.
Maybe nightime lightning tonight? But there won't be the upper level support tonight that we had last night.

Looks like thunderstorms all night with the coromandel still firing! Some lightning showing up from Those Cbs off the West Coast here now too. A good broad active trough.

Re: Thunder possible this week starting 13th Feb
I made it over to the Waikato yesterday, but my day came to an abrupt stop with me hearing a funny noise from the engine & observing the temperature gauge reaching for the sky just South of Putaruru.
A new water hose should be down today and I have my fingers crossed I'm not going to be looking at serious engine repairs.
So sadly I never saw anything
Glad you guys got a show. Lucky Brian, Positives in NZ are rare.

CB's to west and NE, must be another upper trough in the west to support convection so early in the morning.

Re: Thunder possible this week starting 13th Feb
Mesterservice seem to be saying northland is the spot today with better hail and squalls.
just checked the waikato regional council site. golden cross is 140mm over the night. the karangahape gorge is shooting up faster than i have ever seen it go. could be a flash flood event there if this trough doesnt move.
