Re: Tornado in Auckland..
View from Met Service Auckland webcam certainly has shown some ugly black skies at times this afternoon, especially the photo at 16.16hrs.

Wow, what a great spout, missed that , I have been watching the clouds over SE Auckland. I did see a small funnel cloud over South Auckland while sitting in traffic. Photos.

Darn, I missed the waterspout. I was in central Auckland around 4pm too.
The warm sea temperatures around Takapuna would have had a lot to do with this waterspouts development. looks like a bit of convergence there too.

Neat photos, thankyou people!
Are 'waterspouts' like that unusual for Auckland?

This is the cloud that produced the waterspout.

That's probably one of the larger ones I've seen reported, and not often the city gets a front-row seat.Orion wrote: Are 'waterspouts' like that unusual for Auckland?
Hmm... TVNZ say 2 waterspouts and TV3 say several.
Perhaps several funnel clouds and 1, possibly 2 waterspouts?

There was a waterspout in almost the same spot on May 9th 2006 also the Albany Tornado crossed the harbour not far from this location last May producing a wide waterspout.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfk9KMJWp9w

Less misleading, as there doesn't appear to be any evidence of landfall.

Herald are calling it a, 'swarm of twisting waterspouts' this morn?
If it was just one spout, it must've passed through the Rangitoto Channel (North Shore side).

Re: Waterspout(s) in Auckland - Feb 15
could be some good sea breeze convergence conditions today, and so a good chance for some more strong updrafts

Re: Waterspout(s) in Auckland - Feb 15
I quite like the aerial photo.
Wind shear is not a factor with these types of spouts, unlike our winter tornadoes which are formed by strong shear.
I agree Brian, a landspout might be possible today.
