Re: General March Weather
When i looked last night havnt done so yet today but there looked to be a reasonable thunder/hail set up for this friday NE before a cold surge comes up the island.
Very changeable month ahead which will be nice in terms of no boring weather, but i think some more sunshine is what many would appreciate more so given summer has well not really been this season.

Yes. I feel sorry for the people who took February and March off, instead of the Christmas/New Year period, for their holidays, in anticipation of warmer weather.

GFS is certainly developing the weekend low.
250mb wind plot shows the low developing off 140kt jet.

Re: General March Weather
Looking like a good ol' storm coming in this weekend. Has been a while since we had a deep low cross the north island.
The tropics certainly havent thrown anything substantial at us this summer.

Re: General March Weather
latest GFS has it much further north (crossing auckland) and the bulk of the rain north of Hamilton. The last run had everything south of hamilton.
Going to be fun to watch how the models play with this for sure.

Re: General March Weather
Very heavy rain here at times overnight. 26mm since it started at 9pm last night.
Currently 6.8 degrees so it will be snowing down quite low for the time of year.

Re: General March Weather
24mm here now with 2.5mm in last 10mins and its very heavy here now. Have to walk from my car a wee way shortly with driving rain. 9 degrees with gusts up to 50km/h. March could very well already be wetter than February was already come the end of this. Will have to loook at the stats later when have time. Looks like only an hour or so left of this though.

Re: General March Weather
Much the same here overnight, snowstormwatcher and melja: gusty winds and rain.
Presently 7.2 degrees and 92% humidity. Light rain, moderate to fresh southerly, overcast.
Smells like Autumn!
[I have a weather-dependent appointment in Ashburton this morning and am hoping it'll clear - any thoughts, anyone?]

Yep, agree Brian - 15mm here this morn from that rain band, which will be going into my Feb total. I see mean-winds at Tiritiri also jumped up to at least 70 km/h on the back of that - very gusty here.Manukau heads obs wrote:but rain up to 9am this morning, 1st march, is officialy for NZ still going into Feb total

Re: General March Weather
Ended with 30mm here all falling before 830am with breaks in the night going by radar - so when it fell , it fell! Fine day with cloudy periods and a cold winter like southerly. Still brisk out there and a few spots of rain at the moment from some passing clouds.

Re: General March Weather
Cool morning, down to the lowest temperature so far for the year.
Great thin AS layer covering most of the sky at the moment with a gentle NE. Probably a sign of things to come

Re: General March Weather
Shock horror this morning when i walked out the door, breathing steam on the 2nd of march is rather unusual brrr whats winter going to be like hate to think .
A small coating of snow along the alps too.
15mm of rain from yesterday, i also noticed an area of weak unstable showers moving through around 7pm last night with some virga forms and a few large drops of rain.
Must of been a small trough brushing through as around 5pm there was some deep red dots on the radar near Timaru as it moved up slowly.
