Re: General March Weather
A good day after some early morning drizzle and cloud, afternoon shallow convection to the south.
For peoples reference: The Matangi Weather Station has moved (down the road), its now in a open paddock. The Anemometer still needs to be linked up the station (its a bit away from the ISS), it has been setup though it just needs the cable to connect it, this should be done this week. The anemometer is now 6.5 meters above ground in an relatively open paddock. All readings from the station will be greatly improved with the new location

Re: General March Weather
Its the usual 30knot wind here compounded by the 4.30 angled pine tree limb that the council wont cut on their land and sunning themselves in Hawaii with our rates...

Re: General March Weather
Hi
I see BOM first played with the idea (now does not like it), and then GFS is starting to play with the idea
and ECMWF has gone all out, with the idea, of a substantial TC -> tropical low moving south towards NZ in a week or so from now...
a long time out...and could be just artistic license on the part of the models, LOL

Re: General March Weather
Wow, look at that. I'm an absolute novice at this stuff, but looking at the ECMWF maps from 1 April onwards, does it suggest two low pressure systems merging to form this? (pic attached courtesy of ECMWF medium-range forecast page)

It will happen its easter, guarantee it be slightly more to our east of us and totally wreck the weekend then.ECMWF are often correct about "a system".

Not only Easter but the start of the school holidays.Michael wrote:It will happen its easter, guarantee it be slightly more to our east of us and totally wreck the weekend then.ECMWF are often correct about "a system".
From memory ECMWF were extremely accurate last Pacific storm season with their predictive maps. Might be time to relocate the anemometer, which is currently listing dangerously off the top of the garden fence and engulfed in a fast-growing weed.

Its probably that time of year to clear the guages of leaves and spiders and make sure theyre spinning freely,in time as winter approches.

Re: General March Weather
Mainly fine with an enthusiastic SW wind here today. I don't think we made it to 19 deg and tonight's low predicted to be 8, which might warrant switching the heat pumps from cooling to heating for a change.

For a change, this is a nice posting on this forum for a wind flow from the SW for Auckland as apposed to the usual ones that usually has gales and pine kneedles thrown into the scenario.littleheaven wrote:Mainly fine with an enthusiastic SW wind here today.

Cheers. I'm trying to find some suitable euphemisms and that one seemed to fit.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:For a change, this is a nice posting on this forum for a wind flow from the SW for Auckland as apposed to the usual ones that usually has gales and pine kneedles thrown into the scenario.
Tonight I'd describe conditions as lethargic. It's died right down.

Re: General March Weather
Nice to hear from you Richard, which since, there have been interesting events for Canterbury that have been happening..
We've had 2 days or should I say nights of lightning flashes here, west and east. Nothing tonight though.

Re: General March Weather
It SW always dies down at night unless an isobaric one with real pressure difference ie low Vs high not just 5mb strange how the change always occurs overnight not in the middle of the day hardly.

Re: General March Weather
Beautiful, crisp morning. 13.6 degrees, absolutely still. A little bit of... I think it's altocumulus, overhead (hope that's right, I'm still learning my cloud types), and a thicker patch of something off to the south that I can't identify. All hints and tips gratefully accepted! I'd like to get to the point where I can identify without checking my book.

Re: General March Weather
Usually it be stratocumulus in an anticyclone or when warmer puffy cumulus.

Re: General March Weather
Thank you, Michael. It's a flat, featureless bank to the south of me, but it doesn't appear high enough to be anything other than stratus of some kind. Hard to tell when it's on the horizon, though.Michael wrote:Usually it be stratocumulus in an anticyclone or when warmer puffy cumulus.
Temp now up to 15.8, still dead calm.

Re: General March Weather
The warmest day, of whatever season we've been having, for some time. Very nice.
Lots of pyrocumulus popping up around the county as crop-farmers take advantage of conditions to harvest and get ready for the next crop.
I notice some mackerel skies and mares' tails and expect it may be windy soon.
Seems to be moderate to fresh north-west to westerly at present; 18.9 degrees; 41% humidity.

Re: General March Weather
ECMWF still wants to bring a tropical low system with rain down onto NZ next week, the rain starting Monday in the north.
An early Easter forecast might go for a change to disturbed westerlies with some showers or rain for NZ more likely over the southwest of the country.
