I tend to agree with you a bit there Brian but still hard to tell where the centre is exactly

Re: Deep low crossing North Island Saturday 3 March
yeah, once its in range of the rain radar it will be easier
-2.6hpa/hr dropping now here!. Its now dropping at a rate that will produce severe gales.
Just got my scanner going again to pick up the now casting reports (been ages since I got that going)...they had changed the frequency...found it..its much stronger signal now...I see they have added Hokianga...

Re: Deep low crossing North Island Saturday 3 March
the barometer drop we are getting here certainly supports it moving more east than ESE

996hpa here
thats what GFS had plotted (around the same for Hawera and for Auckland as getting now ) for 1am, 1 hour from now
so its a bit ahead of where it should be pressure wise, so its on track or better than what GFS has modelled
I notice that Hokianga is gusting to 45 knots on the now casting, with NNW wind

Re: Deep low crossing North Island Saturday 3 March
The jet influencing the low was very zonal for most of Friday. The upper trough is rapidly sharpening over the SI now which should steer the low more towards the ESE. By 18Z it should be vertically stacked up to 500hPa.

Re: Deep low crossing North Island Saturday 3 March
yes, low center moving right over south taranaki, as forecasted
we got to 62 knots here (114kmh)
our 2nd wind turbine up by the house has blown down
not sure why yet, its too dark out
quick inspection shows the steel cable guy wires snapped

Have been woken several times through the night by rain and winds; haven't paddled out to read rain-gauge yet.
Barometer has gone up some 3 hPa since last night.

Re: Deep low crossing North Island Saturday 3 March
Been a relatively quiet night in Wellington compared to up north
Obs since midnight:
Low barometer of 981.9. ie right now.
Temp 11.1, with high of just 12
Rain 36mm (still raining at a steady 10mm per hour)
55kmph max gust. Wind is just starting to really crank in from the south. Correlates with what the rain radar is showing.
