I see Dunedin Aero also on about -6C this morn, its lowest temp so far this year. Dunedin Aero's all-time lowest-equal temp since records began in 1963 is -8.8C recorded on May 28th, 1988 and July 8th, 2007.

Not sure what we got down to overnight but I would bet my house it was pretty close to zero.. bit of a light frost out there & the place is really struggling to warm up.

Re: Frosts 2012
I was living in Ashburton in May '88 and recall a terrific frost then - something like -6 deg. air temp. (about 20deg Fahrenheit) - after snow that fell there around the 22nd.Nev wrote:I see Dunedin Aero also on about -6C this morn, its lowest temp so far this year. Right now it's still only -0.6 deg here. But rising

Re: Frosts 2012
It was a ripper of a frost, normally Granny smiths can handle a frost but not ones like that though, hope its not a sign of the winter to come,we will always get at least one -9 every winter and the heaviest ive seen was -12 in 2001,then the 10 day long run of frosts killed all the Wattle trees in the district, even wiped out large areas of Manuka that grew in the shade.

Re: Frosts 2012
Ended up with -6.6 here this morning. Could even be colder tonight provided it stays clear as its cooling down much faster than last night. 1 degree now.

Re: Frosts 2012
Could be a very cold one tonight with the temperature at the airport on minus 0.5 already. However 2.3 degrees in my area of town. Depends whether we get coastal cloud developing overnight or not. Amazingly its 10 degrees in the eastern suburbs while in the negatives at the airport! Bit of a sea breeze obviously

Worth noting that in May 1984 there was an extended forsty spell in clear SW conditions - followed by the mildest winter on record!

Yes, it does, even though there have been plenty of mild winters since then.Richard wrote:Well i hope this winter follows that same pattern Rupert, does that record still stand??
