Re: Low pressure for the north from 19th March
Absolutely hammering down all evening here on Auckland's North Shore. Rain gauge says 5mm in the last hour. Seems a bit light but it's too darn wet to go out and check if there are leaves blocking the nozzle.

Re: Low pressure for the north from 19th March
Temp/dewpoints should come up today, warmer air just east of here, grey murky weather is not so bad if it is warm. Daytime max at Greylynn yesterday was only 16C.
Currently 15C with light rain and a light SE breeze.
I see Mangawhai Heads had a 113mm yesterday

GFS is certainly playing up the low pressure over the north later tomorrow.the jet stream in the north tasman looks like its going to spawn a new low as the models originaly showed
The low coming down from the north tomorrow will bring some very heavy rain with it, have to see where exactly it ends up, hopefully over Auckland. Northland certainly won't want it.

Re: Low pressure for the north from 19th March
My manual gauge suggests 48mm for this rain event, which is within 2mm of the other 2 stations near me. (I have suspected my Davis gauge has been reading low for several months now but saw no reason why it should be)

Re: Low pressure for the north from 19th March
check that the spoon rocker is free to move, and that the rain gauge is level
it is generaly accepted though that the davis gauge is up to 5% low on readings, i.e you can add a rain offset to software

Re: Low pressure for the north from 19th March
maybe not
BOP will be getting fohn effect in the lee of the gisborne ranges and the sat image shows clear patches over the BOP and so the SE wind will be blowing cross shore, i.e over the land and getting some heating...
temperature still climbing here , over 22C here now

Re: Low pressure for the north from 19th March
Interesting that GFS can't agree with the European and Ukmet on tomorrows tropical low.
GFS is going for a deeper low 992hpa moving SE and crossing Northland to be west of Auckland at midnight tomorrow.
European and UKmet both are the same with a shallower low (above 1000hpa) moving south to be over western BOP at midnight.

Re: Low pressure for the north from 19th March
yes, it is a warm night for the time of year alright
I see Townsville had a tornado associated with the tropical low over inland queensland (which is now on the move SSE)

Re: Low pressure for the north from 19th March
The warm front crosses Auckland tonight with some heavy rain.
On weatherzone they are a bit peeved the media called it a 'mini tornado'. But when you look at what tornadoes do in USA the downunder tornadoes are definitely mini.I see Townsville had a tornado

Re: Low pressure for the north from 19th March
Well it depends on your definition of mini.
The tornado down here still reaches from the cloud base to the groud. They still are 10's of metres wide. Just not 100's of metres wide.
The only thing different here is they are WEAKER! Often smaller in width but not in height.
Still uncertianty on where the rain is going to fall today in the models. MS must be having a hard time putting out any warnings that are needed if the models cant work out what is going to happen.

Getting totally off-topic here guys. The 'mini-tornado' debate has been thrashed in the past. I've posted a link in the 'Weather Abroad' forum re the Townsville 'tornado'.
