Antarctic Low - April 29-May 1

Unread post by Tornado Tim »

Looks like the South western end of the south Island is getting clipped by the cold front now which has a decent amount of lightning within it.

Some showers behind the front have turned thundery also.

A lot of 'north' in the strong nor'west breeze here at present, judging by the direction in which the autumn leaves are being swept away; 18 degrees; sunny.
Pressure about 993.5 hPa. & falling.

Have had some big squalls this afternoon on the coast here.. the lightning has now begun toward the south. Frequent flashes but very much embedded so would be lucky to see a clear bolt.

Yes the front is very active atm, radar detecting echos to 50dbz i can see.

The front looked really good on the NASA MODIS satilite, with the upper level jet cloud to the north and fresh development on the northern end of the front.

Very mild outside. Not a breath of wind and currently 18.3 degrees. I see Ashburton has a strong northerly but is only on 11 in comparison.

Impressive band in South Canterbury spilling over but weakening as it heads NE towards CHCH. Think we will see some brief rain but nothing too exciting.

Quick amendment.. that roof lifted was in Hokitika sorry, along the main drag to KJ.
Had another squall just before with a very close strike, going to be the order of the evening I suppose. Expecting a few cm's of snow on Arthurs overnight.

Strong gusty NW kicking up out there now with an increase in temperature from 16C half an hour ago to 19C now, brief rain band coming so might get a few decent gusts as the rain goes through not sure if it will swing SW though may stay W-NW.
Tomorrow should see a good change in the afternoon with some squally type hail showers maybe a clap of thunder, snow down to around 400m perhaps.

It looks to have been a lightning active Front along the West Coast and near the Divide.
Winter arriving  I see MS have forecast lows of -4C for Qtwn/Wanaka Tues morn, certainly some very chilly air moves onto the SouthIsland tomorrow afternoon.

Managed 11mm from this system and any strong winds were confined to about an hour just before it rained at 9.00pm,then like it all ways does when it rains from west,it went calm while it rained.

Was the opposite here. Most of yesterday saw very little to no wind, we had a period of NW in the afternoon for about an hour, just moderate breeze at most then it was dead calm and mild last night before the brief rain hit where the westerly rose and then as soon as the rain stopped it was dead calm again. 1mm here from the brief burst.

Recorded 3.8mm from that squally burst of rain so big local variations in intensity.
