Does a NW not die out when it rains like it does here.
Its pouring down ATM and like always, its gone calm.
My experience has been of trees blowing over when the leaves get wet, tree gets top-heavy & over it goes in the gale.
And the nearly-horizontal rain is very memorable.
Looks like a thunder/hail risk around the mid to north Canterbury coast later tomorrow. 18Z gfs is certainly showing it. While there is no CAPE the upper air is extremely cold and the airmass will be strongly forced. Just need a little bit of moisture, so very coastal to offshore.

Hmm will keep an eye for this, I'm not 100% sold on it tho. I think it will be a very coastal event should we see sparks.
Man we are getting some wind this afternoon here, wouldnt have got to the 120km as forcasted but would have to be at least 100 at times.
5mm from this mornings shower
Wind was vicious here around 4pm, seemed to have gone more nor-west or westerly; died down a bit after an hour or so; sounds like it's gathering steam again now...
Ive heard through Facebook that there's lots of trees down over roads about our district, there will be a few kids not getting to school tomorrow, ive lost the tops out of two Macrocarpa trees,so that was one nasty wind
Very turbulent-looking skies, both towards the coast from Ashburton when I was there 4pm-ish, and to the south and sthwest as I drove home. Lightning-static frequent on radio at present, thunder just 10 or 15 seconds later. Raining, and fine hail briefly. 7.7deg.
looking interesting at present with a very cold looking SW aloft, there isnt alot of wind to speak of down below and with an ' already S/SW flow it can be a good sign.. we shall see as the air keep moving in
