Model guidance suggests that an area of very cold area aloft will be moving north to northeast on track with the low. The frontal features for the North Island seem to Greet the Western areas by Sunday afternoon it seems. Metservice has already issued a Severe Weather Warning for the Taranaki area due to high rain rates and a potential of large accumulation of rain.
Also Severe Weather Watches have been issued for a western areas of both Islands.Metservice wrote:Periods of heavy rain are expected for Taranaki from Sunday afternoon
through to Monday evening, accompanied by squally thunderstorms. In
the 33 hours from midday Sunday to 9pm Monday expect 120 to 180mm of
rain about and north of the Mountain, however expect 250 to 350mm of
rain on higher slopes of Mt Taranaki. Peak intensities of 25 to
35mm/hr in thunderstorms during Monday.
Thunderstorms in the Tasman have been continuously going overnight and look to be quite squally and orientated in a line the last few Sat pictures.
