surprised M/S did not at least have a severe thunderstorm watch out on the CB line that has been hitting north taranaki over the last hour?

Can't say as I'm totally convinced it was actually a tornado?

Don't have the 8:15pm image but, here's the link to the 9:05pm MetService Akld radar-image that David posted last night. And below is MetVUW's version (Papamoa is just above the 'o' in '.com')...

Edit: Note that David's pic shows what may have passed earlier further to the SE.

Not sure about the Papamoa event, it could have been a waterspout but there wasn't much damage. The 9pm radar is too out of date for 8.15pm.

Sounding for Paraparam today.

Very steep lapse rates under 700mb with 100j/kg CAPE as well. The 700mb temp is around -8C.

Came across 2 great photos of the Wellington event on Tuesday 15th May courtesy of twitter. Whilst they don't show the waterspout itself, they do show the development of the associated cell that spawned them.

Rebeccas tweet at the time stated "looks like it might rain. four passersby just told me they saw a tornado in the ocean from here." By the looks the photo was taken from the Western side of Lyall Bay.

Rebecca only tweeted this 2nd photo today, so no idea of the time. It shows how weird the event was for Wellington. It was not associated with your normal southerly change. The fact planes we landing from the south into a light northerly all day, yet the clound cell developed off the south coast mid avo, and then rolled north just prior to 5pm with the associated waterspouts. The rain was VERY heavy and coming down vertically. Very suprised it did not produce any lightning. It certainly looked like a good candidate to!

I missed seeing the waterspout, but got absolutely drenched riding home on my motorbike just after 5pm

Interesting the Met Service use the term 'non tornadic' to describe the Wellington waterspout. I was thinking along the same lines with the Taranaki waterspouts. The Okato waterspout on Wednesday was non tornadic but Mondays Oakura event was a tornadic form as it was formed by strong low level directional wind shear.

Also its interesting to note the surface dewpoint differences between the non tornadic and tornadic form. The Wellington and Okato events occurred in dewpoints of 8C. The Oakura event occurred in a dewpoint of 15C.
