Nor'west risen to gale in the last fifteen minutes, accompanied by lashing rain.
Temp. 12.7 degrees, I think it's been in double figures since yesterday evening.

I guess this is the thread to post in.. lil old Runanga here copped it for the 2nd time this month, this time I was here to see it all.
A downpour of rain I can only compare to a HP Supercell lashed the place flooding half the village & the local shops AND the new fire station. Ironically, the Grey district mayor Kokshoorn was in the house with mum & I, talking about the flood the other week when all hell broke loose, so he too saw first hand. More water through houses, back to square 1 but again, things can be replaced.

And some thunder before to round off the day. Stuff are running one of my photos but they screwed up, that is the neighbour.. not my mum lol.

Wee shower with a strong wind change with one flash of lightning here about half an hour after the AB 60-0 demolition. Powerhouse of a night

That's an incredible amount of rainfall Dale! Sounds like you may have exceeded the official Cropp River at Waterfall, 1-hour rainfall record of 134mm set in 2004. :D Here's the story you referred to btw...

'Wicked' winds cause chaos - Stuff

Re the 8mm quoted for Greymouth, last night Karen (standing in front of a similar Runanga flood pic) reckoned around 30mm for Greymouth, with over half of that in just a couple of hours in the afternoon. So yes, very isolated. I'd imagine the hills between you and the coast must trigger these local rainbursts?

I'm hoping we can squeeze a thunderstorm for Auckland out of the next frontal system, due Tuesday. The front certainly looks squally with big winds ahead of it, particularly for Taranaki southward. Something to watch out for in the models at least.

If the rainfall there starts getting quoted as a new record, I'd like to see something better than "approximately".

Hiya Nev.. I am giving that as an estimated guess based on my gauge. It is accurate enough as a Nylex can be but I would love to compare readings from other "backyarders" in the area. Runanga/Dunollie/Spring Creek mine is situated in the middle of a valley here, the Paparoa range & Mt Davy to our East and the Rapahoe Range/Escarpment directly to our West which is the wall between us and the Tasman. Basically when things come funnelling in from the NW it is like sleeving a dart through a straw, they do something to squeeze in some extreme rainfall amounts. That is only the 3rd time I have seen rain like that here, but the first time I have seen flooding of that intensity. Locals say it is an all too regular thing & that there can be nothing down the road yet this place is soaked. That last bit is quite true, have seen it myself. Down the road in Cobden, basically Nth Greymouth, spoke to a friend on the phone about 6pm, he said they had bugger all.

And yes, RWood.. I dont know the rainfall history of this area as to whether its a record or not. Going by locals accounts, they have seen worse. But many here can vouch for it's intensity.

I've got a 'Nylex' rain-gauge that I find quite reliable, handy too as it can overflow into a chamber than can hold up to 250mm.
No, that is an amazing rain-fall and it was handy that someone like you had a gauge to record an event like that considering the waterflow in those pictures and the fact is was quite isolated with nothing much down the road. :-k

The duration (was it just 1 hour?) is important if anyone is talking about new NZ records.
