Wind is picking up significantly up north. Tutukaka is to gusting 100km in the last hour.

Still below freezing here with thick high cloud, looks brighter to the NW so it should warm up in the next couple of hours.

Ice pellets are quite rare in NZ so interesting report orion. Also you don't come across freezing rain much in this country either. In USA they call freezing rain sleet.around 10.30pm we had what I can only describe as slowly-falling ice

Warm air finally arrived associated with the warm front. Was a substatial increase in temp with the wind change.

We had snow in the Corriedale area of North Otago 2-3cm on country roads from 4-5 am this morning . We have grit trucks out dealing with the snow and black ice .

Got to 5.9 C today currently 3.1 C in Oamaru , went for a drive back to where this morning's picture was taken , roads freezing over and black ice beginning to form

Tomorrows (Wednesdays) thunderstorm set up could justify a new thread, looks like we get an organised line of convection heading our way later tomorrow. Should reach the west of the North Island just on dark Quite a nice looking upper system coming in. Isolated waterspouts/tornadoes on the cards for Taranaki and Bay of Plenty given the onshore flow there. We'll see how this set up shapes up in the gfs next 24hrs.
