Its doing what Manukau was talking about before gone S-SE the band is intensifying over north canterbury, its back to a steady snow here but not the huge flakes like from before.
It was sleeting with small flakes for awhile there which had me wondering whether the freezing level was lifting but it seems not the case as we are back to snow again.

Just got back from work in town and 22cm on the grass there! 17cm at home. Bucketing down, thick dry powder! Was a mission driving home.

apparently in Rakaia the main highway is clear and vehicles going normal speed. Methven no snow falling. Just had a quick look before at the snow forecast on metservice and it looks like we'll get this for about 3 hours.

Went shopping with the missus just before, was small size snow when we went into the supermarket, come back out ( 1530 ) and snowing heavily again. Just got home and still fairly heavy.

Lines company Orion network chief executive Rob Jamieson says about 1900 customers in parts of Harewood, West Melton, McLeans Island, Halswell, Hororata and Annat are without power, mostly where trees weighed down by snow have fallen on power lines.

Mr Jamieson says staff are working as quickly as possible to restore electricity.

Mainpower says it hopes to have power restored to most people in North Canterbury, but some more isolated areas could be without power overnight.

St John ambulance is asking people in Canterbury to take extreme care as the snow settles and roads and footpaths become icy. The Christchurch City Council is warning people to stay out of Hagley Park because of snow-ladden branches.

Schools and tertiary institutions in the region are closed, including Canterbury and Lincoln Universities and Christchurch Polytech. Courts and tribunal services throughout Canterbury are closed due to snow. All postponed cases will be rescheduled and parties notified.

Buses, ferries cancelled in Christchurch

The Canterbury Regional Council says all buses and ferries have been cancelled in Christchurch from Wednesday afternoon.

All buses in the city had been taken off the road at 11am. The council in the afternoon announced that bus and ferry services will not resume and it is also unclear if they will operate on Thursday.

An update on its services will be made at 5.30am on Thursday.

Christchurch International Airport remains open on Wednesday, but flights are delayed. Passengers are advised to check with their airline to find out the status of their flight.

Cold night for some in Kaikoura

About half of the Kaikoura district will remain without power overnight on Wednesday after a snow-related outage in the afternoon.

A spokesperson for lines company Mainpower says the outage originally affected the entire district of about 2000 customers, but half have been reconnected.

The spokesperson says only a small portion of the remaining homes will be restored by the end of Wednesday.

Mainpower is warning people to keep well away from power lines weighed down by snow, as they could be live.

Meanwhile, about 15cm of snow fell at Tekapo overnight on Tuesday.

Road closures

Latest News update

The Lewis Pass on State Highway 7 from Culverden to Springs Junction through Reefton remains closed due to snow on Wednesday, as does State Highway 73 from Springfield through Arthurs Pass to Otira.

Chains are also essential for vehicles on State Highway 73, through both Porters and Arthurs Pass. The passes are closed to towing vehicles.

State Highway 65 from Shenandoah to Maruia is closed.

In Westland, flooding has shut parts of State Highway 6 - they are Runanga to Greymouth and Inangahua to Inangahua Junction.

There is also black ice on many other roads and the Transport Agency says people should avoid travelling if possible.
