The low passing over the Auckland Islands currently is rotating very quickly, and very deep. Impressive! If only it had visited us up this way..

For a remote weather system such as this, how accurately is the central pressure measured or how much is assumed from modelling?

Data from bouys, rawinsonde,SAO,AIREP I think are used in this case...... I doubt any forecasted data is used to blend the current to the forecast.Captain Salty wrote:For a remote weather system such as this, how accurately is the central pressure measured or how much is assumed from modelling?
There are many differences in modeling the current data, you would have to ask Metservice how they do this.

Re: Possible Polar Weather - last week of June?
I was just thinking, if a low was predicted to deepen to record breaking levels but was unable to be measured directly at that time, then presumably it wouldn't count as a new record?

I'm visiting my folks in Mosgiel near Dunedin, a dry sunny day here but there were snow showers just to the west and south. Light snow for Balclutha through to Strath Taieri.

Family over in Westport have just called saying massive Thunder and Lightning storm there at the moment. Looks like later next week that another beast could be on the cards - early days!

Re: Possible Polar Weather - last week of June?
Yes i sniggered at the name too, theres nothing cyclonic about that low no rotational winds and not to mention its quite far south .
Just because its a deep low doesnt make it a cyclone, wouldnt think so anyway.
Nice dry day here all around just the way it is with these situations, action west and south but nothing here.
Still that westerly was cold coming off the snow, and i did notice the CB's skipping past the Peninnsula today but may have been quite offshore by the looks.
Maybe a brief dose of icy showers Thursday afternoon as the flow does flick S-SW briefly with a coastal trough, but it would be very coastal.

Re: Possible Polar Weather - last week of June?
Yeah just a dry day, abit windy, nothing to major though, how ever were few good gusts out in west melton.
Wind cold though.
I think its fair that the south and west of the south island can have this one I to saw those clouds out past BP today aswel, to me they were'nt CB but more towering CU certainly showing some nice cold air sneaking past.
Shame its not summer.. then the CB and thunderstorms would have been on the cards.
Joliver, to me it is colder then normal, but im saying that for this month, it may be warmer then normal next month to average it out, but yes i think colder, i beleive our average temp here in Christchurch is around 5 or 6C for the month??

I just have that feeling that the next 2 months are going to be very very cold. with lots of sharp wintry blastsmikestormchaser wrote:Yeah just a dry day, abit windy, nothing to major though, how ever were few good gusts out in west melton.

All I will say is those comments from Weather-Watch in my mind make it look very amateurish.mattyj46 wrote:what do you guys think about weather watch calling it the 'southern ocean cyclone'?
A cool 7.9°C atm here now with more showers coming in on the SW flow.
Tomorrow evening looks like it could contain some thunder later on here.

Well offshore by the look of it as I was coming back to Chch this afternoon. Showers did clip the southeast corner of BP according to radar earlier in morning.Jasestorm wrote: Still that westerly was cold coming off the snow, and i did notice the CB's skipping past the Peninnsula today but may have been quite offshore by the looks.

Re: Possible Polar Weather - last week of June?
Yes, thunder inbound later this evening for the west of the North Island! We should get at least a few rumbles with small hail and very squally conditions. Gusts to 55kts on the cards for Auckland. The 500mb temp will be -27C, dp 10C.Tomorrow evening looks like it could contain some thunder later on here.
We came close to catching a storm here yesterday with some quite active cells reaching the west coast of the NI.

I would prefer we kept the cyclone term for the tropical variety.what do you guys think about weather watch calling it the 'southern ocean cyclone'?
The Americans use the term for low pressure systems and in a strict technical sense, a cyclone is any low pressure system.
