The gfs hasn't budged, looks like the whole country gets a good chill. The central North Island towns like Ohakune stand to catch some snow later tomorrow.

Re: General June Weather
I just viewed the sat picture and thought the same thing Richard, wind picked up here already some strong gusts rattling the chimney.

Re: Possible Polar Weather - last week of June?
still must be very compact low
as the barometer is not very low at SW cape...and wind not very strong there either....
Southland and Stewart Island currently have strong NW, but nothing unusual
but the wind field should spread out today from what the models show

Quite a gusty westerly here this morning but nothing unusual yet.
4mm of rain from a heavy shower just after midnight.

The flow is too westerly to get much weather in Dunedin off this system, although there will be a strong westerly, particularly tomorrow.

Re: Possible Polar Weather - last week of June?
The low has tracked a little further south than initially forecast. I think Stewart Island may have recorded gusts to 140 km/h, but a lot less at Invercargill.

Re: Possible Polar Weather - last week of June?
interesting how auckland city has been trapped under cold air overnight...which is only slowly getting pushed out of the way now..
nearly 15C here...with a strong WNW wind
and yet only 11C in the city

Lightning activity looks to have picked up on the approaching front.

Re: Possible Polar Weather - last week of June?
The timing hasn't been favourable. We've had heavy rain two nights in a row, but almost no snow. Had the cold air come through on either night we'd be looking at deep snow on the ground instead of just puddles of water.

the last scan the Taranaki radar did (11.45) before what i imagine was the ballloon going up causing it to stop looked very nasty towards waitomo area. lots of white and purple on the radar.

Is it raining down there? We'd be fighting some very deep snow in the high country had a cold front come through during the last couple of nights.Ice Maiden wrote:Just heard from colleague in Gore heavy snow showers and 1C currently

Re: Possible Polar Weather - last week of June?
Hi. I'm near Omarama. There is only some light snow on the tops around here.
The Basin elevation rises towards the Divide and Lake Tekapo, so it doesn't surprise me that the snow would be deeper there.
But man, if it had gone cold overnight we would probably have seen record snow falls.
