After the Shortest Day

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Why , is it generally considered, that, the coldest part of winter occurs after the shortest day?
Is there any reason for this ?

its to do with the oceans isnt it? they take longer to cool down and warm up. hence why feb is the warmest month usually and december has the longest day.

The 30-years means for NZ sites overall show only a tiny advantage for Feb. over Jan. In parts of the eastern, southern and inland South Island January is the warmest. However, July is clearly the coldest month everywhere.

the oceans reach their warmest late summer/early autumn
and there coldest late winter/early spring (which makes spring slow to warm up, and autumn slow to cool down (compared to continental locations)
