Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Auckland:

This warning affects people in the following local government areas:
AUCKLAND CITY, MANUKAU CITY, NORTH SHORE CITY, PAPAKURA, WAITAKERE CITY,
FRANKLIN and RODNEY.

At 12:30 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near
AUCKLAND, WARKWORTH, OREWA, PUHOI, INNER HAURAKI GULF, MATAKANA and WHANGAPARAOA.

These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the southsoutheast, and are
expected to lie near AUCKLAND, OREWA, AUCKLAND CITY, MANUKAU, INNER HAURAKI GULF,SOUTH AUCKLAND and WHANGAPARAOA at 01:00 pm and near AUCKLAND, PUKEKOHE,PAPAKURA, AUCKLAND CITY, MANUKAU, SOUTH AUCKLAND, DRURY and BOMBAY at 01:30 pm.

These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain.

Looks like it is a prolonged heavy dumping rather than an actual storm as I see no lightning activity yet......

It is so black and dark to the north. I've just been outside doing a quick spot of maintenance on the drains and dragged all the orchids under cover.

I see that an Emirates 777 has just gone around at Auckland and is now heading out into the gulf to wait it out.

By any chance are you on Barton st? I used to live at Lunar appartments and look down the gully. Amazing view.

Ive just looked at some stations and all reporting 25-30+mm with rain still falling heavily at some inside the last hour.

No, Ferncroft St, opposite Akld Hospital helipad. But yes, amazing views!

He has been up to Silverdale and is now heading back towards Hunua for an approach to the other runway. Sky getting lighter in the city. No thunder heard here, just very heavy rain.
I take it all back, hes climbing looking like a diversion, heading south.

Torrential rain here at Auckland uni, this would be some of the heaviest I have seen. Would estimate 40mm at least in the last hour, still bucketing down.
