Yes that's primarily due to the radar beam being significantly more elevated around that area due to the curvature of the earth.
The echos being picked up there are from the upper half of the convection, eg Anvil Rain etc.......

The Northland Radar should be up soon to fill this gap :)
I would only use rainfall estimation from radar within 150km from the radar site.

Any good advice please as to the likelyhood of cold/cloudy weather still to come for Christchurch this winter or was 6/7 June the coldest/bleakest for this year?

I see Blue Skies indicating snow to 400 m later next week.

i see the karangahape (spelling?) gorge is shut as of 12.30 due to flooding. Looking at the waikato regional council river graph its currently experiencing a second peak with this new rain falling.

when is the northland radar due to be operating? have they started the build yet?

yea looks like there heaps more heavy rain to move over the coromandel penisula. Could be some nasty news come tonight. Back raining heavily here. most paddocks have surface water in them. most drains/streams still rising too.

.
A low system showing up in the models early next week is perhaps something to watch for cold air/precipitation over Canterbury, see how this looks in the models in a few days time.

Very heavy rain this morning, but I missed most of it. I had to go down to Opotiki to replace some faulty equipment. Noted significant evidence of prior flooding crossing the road at Papamoa on the way back, but sadly it wasn't picked up by the camera in the car.

Reminded me of some of our May significant rain events of our past.

Wasn't so bad south of about Paengaroa, but still wet most of the way.

The Golden Cross rain gauge on the EW site is showing over 300mm now. I have no idea how accurate this rain gauge is but you would expect EW to have their rain gauges professionally set up.

From what I can see the EW site isnt showing that figure at all, more like 250mm instead.

Looks like 330mm in the last 48 hours tho.

Interesting to note it looks like 1 maybe two rivers have broken record levels today. Could be more tonight if the rain doesn't stop soon.

Queens head looks like it Peaked at near 7.25m which was the record in 1996.

Kiwitahi looks like it peaked at about 4.48m and the 1986 record was 4.42M

There are a few photo's of the flooding in the Karangahake Gorge in this article the flooding apparently did make it in to the Waikino Tavern again. I note also that the base track around Mount Maunganui is closed by a slip.

Yeah, it is surprising to get this type of shower activity in Winter. I was thinking that this stuff was developing on the stationary front but that has now moved to the lower North Island, so this must be on a trough of some sort.

Fairly warm around 18°C before the shower dumped rain......
