Yes an active cell cluster going on in the west atm

Can only just see the lightning through the clouds but flickers every 5 seconds or so.

just saw a nice looping bolt out the bottom and in front of the CB low on the horizon

also watched a couple of planes from OZ suddenly appear out of the gloom of the cb (i.e their lights)

I am getting a strike rate of 15 a minute ....peaked at 20 and even over at one stage

rain radar now showing what must be hail in this system on its northern flank line

Radar seems to be breaching 56dbz at times, not a bad storm for NZ

The lightning will be coastal. (cold air over warm sea). Looks like Auckland could get heavy showers through till about dawn.


Sundays system is already a blaze with lightning in the western Tasman!

Yes just hearing the thunder here too, and flashes of lightning. Looked at the weather radar on skyTV for 11pm and it shows a very active area just NW of west Auckland. Looks to even be a small hook if one can be so bold! so the possibility of waterspouts etc??

Definately hail out there too, but as some have said on here it will more than likely fizzle a wee bit once she hits land, especially now its nightime.

Could be worth a trip out to the west coast beaches early 2moro morn though as M/S has a high risk till dawn with the possibility of some rotational action

Just had a HUUUUGE clap out here in Henderson. The lightning lit up the whole sky...and them BAM!

The problem we do have though is very cold land that its just about to hit. Hopefully enough grunt in this thing to make landfall and give us great show.

I've seen the sky tower struck a couple of times, quite a bit of overhead IC lightning as well. A nice storm!

It first woke me at 12.15am, since then I have seen very occasional lightning. Some of this thunder is awesome though, long deep rumbles

Well forget that... NZ overall is set for cracking week of good weather Monday late on. So pack the tramping (very Kiwi) ski's or whatever... it's not going to get a lot better than this cold weather wise.
