Re: General August Weather
Our short run of fine weather in Auckland will end today with an upper trough crossing bringing afternoon rain. While instability is weak the upper air is cold so isolated coastal thunder/hail possible.
The subtropical moisture makes a return at the weekend with the next major system. 5 days out though but gfs showing the system well supported by the jet stream.

Re: General August Weather
Just had a nice gust front cross central Auckland, looked to be a wind change. I hope someone like spwill got a good photo of it. I couldn't get a proper photo from here.

Re: General August Weather
Have just watched a decent looking funnel cloud ( likely a water spout) move across the Manakau Harbour onto South Auckland, went out of view due to rain.
Torrential rain here now with this next line

Re: General August Weather
Looking like a good drying out period ahead here for a while with very little to no rain in the forecast for the extended outlook period. 100mm for the month to date exactly.

Another photo of the funnel cloud (distant) taken about 10 mins after the photos above, it had moved away over South Auckland.

Re: General August Weather
Impressive photo of the funnel cloud. I hope the weather settles down now and we get back to a dryer spell after all this rain down here. Here's hoping for no more cold spells.

Watched what looked like a mini wall cloud out over the Manukau Harbour around 4pm. The airport wind was NE 13kts.

Re: General August Weather
Just add that a number of funnels developed on the lowering. The NZWP sounding shows some good CAPE low down in the sounding which is good for spouts.

General August Weather
Driving back to Auckland from Orewa at 5.30 I saw both an extremely vivid rainbow and some beautiful mammatus. Unfortunately I was not on an area of the motorway where I could easily stop and take a pic. Driving was quite unpleasant, quite a bit of surface water.

Re: General August Weather
oh, cool, then that is from the CB I photographed from Papakura (I was on my way home) and which people in Waiuku saw it
It had a nice rainfree base on that CB and some real nice structure..looked like it was a rotating mesoscale
it was an individual CB all on its own, that first one,....moved south from the Waitemata harbour, just west of the City

Pic here of the inflow base over the Manukau Harbour about 3.45pm. Looking south from One Tree Hill. The base was producing multiple funnels.
The airport nearby had a NE 13kts.
