Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
Haha, crack up. I was up so late the night before then they woke me up with a phone call and came round like 20 mintues later, I could'nt be bothered stressing trying to get ready or anything. I figured no one is gonna care really, it's the storms we are interested in! Mind you did get a haircut the next day after 9 months of not having one, lol.Lacertae wrote: Maaaaaaan, everyone's gonna think storm chasers are nerdy unshowered unshaved geeks living on cold pizza in front of 3 monitors or whatever !

Yeah was definately a cloud with twisty motions, a supercell as such. I'd say the meso started to come together about 5.30pm looking at my images and saw it had kept going through till 6.26pm atleast as it moved over the city, evident in Ben's timelapse images. So pretty darn close to an hour, although for a time it did become a little unorganised but then came together again not long after.
Saw that Rob, was a fantastic photograph! They took some of my pic's to use but didn't put any up, can't have been exciting enough. hehe.
Will finally get through some video footage and post that up soon!
Cheers
Aaron

Remember me when I got interviewed for that Gary Mc cormack narrated programme. I had a fantastic hair-style then, looked as though I had just been struck by lightning!!!!

Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
Love the video!! yes Steve those CGs are the best iv seen from a storm in Canterbury! just aswell i was aiming in the right spot and my video camera i was holding was fairly still, alot of the lightning were blue/ purple coulor witch iv never seen before.
All and all a fantastic storm, hoping we will get another one this season, seems likely.. however it may not be in the city.
I also remember that interview John! and remember the times u were on the roof swirling the chimney in a waiting the storms, great to see haha

Thanks, was a great storm to chase. Was good having Mike there to video.
Yeah that NE breeze was really keen, the wind noise in the video is the NE. I understand a sea breeze but that wouldn't have been a sea breeze would it? Or does the storm sort've suck it in by itself?

Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
To me that wind wasnt just a normal sea breeze, the thunderstorm certainly had an effect on it, and i reakon alot of it was the inflow, you could feel it was getting sucked into the storm as that wind was howling through at one point. we havent had a keen NE like that since late summer/autumm.
And lictauly within about a minute it was dead calm, it was very strange and we didnt know why exactly, but all we heard was the thunder and dead silence in a very short amount of time from howling through to nothing...
cheers: mike

Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
Divergence aloft lifts the air which draws in the low level winds/coastal NE. More of a dynamic thing to do with the upper trough.Thunder wrote:Thanks, was a great storm to chase. Was good having Mike there to video.

Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
also a NW wind through cook straight can become a NE wind into CHCH
was that the case maybe?

Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
From what I recall of the modelling the NE was just a very local thing. But I didn't follow the sitution that closely on the day.

Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
Dan's comments are inline with what U.S storm chaser would call a right split and a left split storm.
In the northern hemisphere a right split is more likely to become severe while over here its the left split.

Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
It was an unusual time of the year for storms along coastal Canterbury as well, the season is the warmer months paticularly around December.

Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
Move inland It is the onshore wind created by the heating that is the big ingredient for storms, that wind can be cold along the coastal fringe.Lacertae wrote:Please tell me again December is a warm month ... I had the heater turned back on until this morning ...

Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
Yes according to the models, no matter how sexy they are and who cares that they are married to Superstars, December will be a warm month. I pick a couple days now to be a hot 22C, maybe the odd 30C day but when that happens, you can turn the heater off.Lacertae wrote:Please tell me again December is a warm month ... Re: Sept 4th Canterbury Thunderstorms
Just located these photos on a friends Facebook page so thought I might share it.
Taken from Ohoka these show a different view of the storm and definitely show the supercell structure.
