Disturbed Westerly, Assoc Low Pressure Systems, 7-10 Sept

Unread post by Tornado Tim »

Time for a new thread with current systems affecting the West coast and the rest of country tomorrow onwards.

The Tasman is really lighting up tonight with fronts and troughs nicely activating, the Blitzortung Network was detecting over 400 strikes per hour at one stage :)

Should be very active/squally over the west of both islands in the coming days, hopefully not too embedded so there can be good photo oppertunities.
There does look to be a window slot low/moderate risk of some isolated heavy showers over South Canterbury up to about Rakaia on the coast, some could turn thundery for awhile Sunday afternoon.
However there is some kind of small front or trough that comes up after dark bringing a SW change, whether that brings anything with it im not too sure.
The low seems to cross in the right place to cut out that westerly flow and lighter winds over south canterbury, pretty sure thats what i am looking at.
Canterbury, home of good rugby and severe storms

Yes, some fast blow ups out in the mid Tasman. Lots of shear over the Tasman.

That would be the most active storm line I have seen in the central Tasman, just need to move NZ 800km west.

Great line, shows the lightning network there is working very well.

Yes Jase, chance Sunday indeed. Did think even late tomorrow / early Sunday at one point but probably will be too westerly.

Another night of storms over the South Island!

This afternoons front over the North Island could have elevated thunder?

Thunder rolling around here now, have heard two good rumbles in the last half-hour and there's a general muttering ongoing in the background.

Jet stream set up for tomorrow. The subantartic jet will be over the North Island tomorrow! Thunderstorms will be aimed at Taranaki southwards but Waikato has possibilities.

Moderate risk tomorrow afternoon for Canterbury as is on the MS chart, best spots will be south on the coast and more likly Birdlings Flat area.
Heres hoping for a decent set up come tomorrow, will have the day to chase free.

Fine weather here all morning with high cloud and a NW. Not that gusty though here, maybe as much as 30km/h at times. 19 degrees currently. Will be great underfoot conditions for the ITM Cup game at AMI this afternoon. Should be interesting conditions in Wellington tonight for the All Blacks!
