That Mount Cook stuff sounds great! Would like to take some lightning photographs there one day, might not be as majestic as I think though as the cloud would obscure any mountain views but who knows.

Cheers

I see the cold air is showing up over the south of the country now, Qtwn on 7C with snow falling on the Skii fields.

Not much with this front for Auckland, max today19C, dewpoint 12C.
Auckland is a bit far north for this round of stormy weather, could go for a drive south tomorrow perhaps 8)

8.2 degrees here at present;
showers have rolled across every hour or so, with occasional lightning-static on the radio; then the sun would come out;
just now awaiting another shower with heavy grey cloud closing in from the west.
We seem to have been sheltered from the worst of the wind, which my spies reported as very strong in the Westerfield and Methven areas over the last day: here, nothing remarkable.
Sounds like it was nice in Timaru :-)

Been windy here but not as strong as I thought it may of got to as in the forecasts.
Wellington seems to of got a hammering,no wonder if you look at the isobars.
Some over-throw rain today but haven't seen any lightning flashes or there haven't been hardly any sferics on the AM radio.
Must of been an amazing night down there at Mt. Cook. I know if I was there on my honeymoon,I probably would of got divorced the next day as Andrea would of said, "It's the lightning or me" [-X :smile:

boom! just got hit by the change! 72.4km gust with a 61.3 max average with heavy rain and small hail at the same time. That was neat. Woke me up off the couch. It caused a crazy temp drop too.
The temp fel from 13.3 at 11.29 to 10.4 at 11.40.

Bugger it sort've eased off a bit just on the coast there. I'm sure there will be many storms to come for most of us this season, well hopefully.....

Fine morning here 14C.

Dewpoints for 6pm today. The 10-11C dp looks good for storms over the west of the North Island given the polar air.

The Latest severe T-storm outlook looks interesting.
Metservice wrote:The country remains under the influence of a strong disturbed westerly flow,bringing further showers to many areas, some squally and thundery with
hail.

An intense trough is expected to move onto central New Zealand late this afternoon. This is likely to bring a period of more intense storms and a watch has been issued for severe thunderstorms with gusts of more than 110 km/h and possible localised tornadoes for the far north of Buller, the northwest corner of Nelson, the outer Marlborough Sounds, the north of Wellington, Kapiti, the Manawatu coast, Taranaki and coastal Waitomo for late this afternoon and into this evening.

There is a high risk of thunderstorms with heavy rain, small hail and gusts of 90 to 110 km/h in Buller, northwest Nelson, the Marlborough Sounds, the north of Wellington, Kapiti to Taranaki and Waitomo, as indicated on the map.

A large area of moderate risk extends from Auckland to East Cape, across the Central Plateau to Wairarapa and southern Wellington, then down the west of the South Island to coastal Southland.

Also, there is a low risk of thunderstorms in Canterbury this afternoon and evening, as a southerly change spreads up the coast, converging with the westerlies.

Any thunderstorms that do eventuate are likely to be accompanied by heavy rain,strong wind gusts and hail, as specified on the chart.

Elsewhere, no thunderstorms expected.

Not sure why the MS have down graded to low from moderate, perhaps they think the westerly will have too much of an affect now.
Still some reasonably cold air coming up later on, with some open ridging over south canterbury.

Updated Outlook:
Metservice wrote:Bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms are affecting parts of the western North Island today. The thunderstorm activity is expected to become more frequent for a time from Taranaki to Kapiti and the Marlborough Sounds late this afternoon and evening, then spread northwards to affect western parts of Waikato,Auckland and southern Northland later this evening. A few thunderstorms are also likely about eastern Bay of Plenty tonight. A low risk covers other northern and western parts of the North Island as indicated on the chart.

Brief heavy rain, hail and squally wind gusts will accompany these thunderstorms. Wind gusts could reach 80-100km/hr, and there is a low risk of some damaging gusts in excess of 110km/hr about coastal Waitomo, Taranaki, Manawatu and Kapiti Horowhenua this evening. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in force for this possibility.

Elsewhere, the thunderstorm risk about the western and southern South Island is now considered low for the remainder of today, and a low risk of thunderstorms remains for coastal Canterbury this evening with a southwest wind change.
Seems like there is an increase of activity off the west coast of the north island. Hopefully we will have a lightshow tonight :)
