Yep heavy hail shower in central Dunedin in the last half hour turned the ground white in a few minutes. About to start again by the looks

The anticyclone is pushing in so there won't be nothing much left for Canterbury in this SW flow.
Yes, there was a good hailstorm over Hornby at 4pm. The cloud looked good from here, nearly as good as the meso-thunderstorm, a week ago today :D
Sadly these Cb forms were "Dead-burgers" as there was no lightning recorded in them owing to it being too cold, with not much prior surface heating and no NE inflow. Hail from the various ones that did cross Canty today would of been of the wintry type, the larger hailstones would of been to the delay of it falling from the cloud with some heating that kept them aloft before falling.

There was some thunder and lightning breifly around 5pm in a heavy hail shower that passed through close to Oxford more so through the foothills.
The latest radar is coming together as i suspected you will note the general direction is now more S-SW onshore rather than W-SW earlier, most of those showers offshore will get bigger as they hit land seen it too many times before.
So in other words its not over for the city no.

thats a great looking CB there Steven Graeme! no wonder there was some good hail in that.
Temperture closing in to now, only 3.7 so starting to inch down to that mark we want to be. good showers developing southward to.

Not a drop of rain or anything else for that matter out here on the west side of rangiora, just strong cold wind.
All over before it begun here.
Dont like the sound of fri night-sat we are taking the carvan to its summer spot on lake benmore this weekend so could be fun.

There looks to be a good heavy band of moisture just off the coast of ashburton if that makes it to land around Chch then things could get interesting.

A hail shower just moved through here followed by some rain, first substantial fall for today.
Currently 0.8C Could be a good frost in the morning as the showers gradually clear away and it clears.

That heavy band offshore is coming in, could be a brief snowfall for some areas so watch this space.
Down to 3.2C here now and still dropping, a few grapel showers not long ago.

i se that band south and offshore however i am gettig the feeling it may break up as it moves through.. not sure why that is.
Normally we would see shower activity come onshore and really fire up, in this case it seems to be dissapating.

Exactly what I've been noticing...like I say the influence of the high ridging in?

Snow was falling earlier on the hills from Cashmere primary and higher. Was settling on the grass, very thin layer at the time but was a nice heavy snow shower while I was up there around 7pm. Yes everything is certainly dissipating as it heads northwards towards the city. Its not looking overly exciting to be honest.

I hope im wrong too :D Im thinking this band coming will be the decider. The fact it is 2 degrees now, we will see if the heavier cells bring the snow level down a little lower and drop the temperature further to allow some snow to fall to near sea level. If that band makes it to the city and its just sleety then I dont hold high hopes for the rest of the night. Yes the coldest air isnt quite here yet but its getting close. Will be touch and go! Only time will tell.
