Canterbury Thunder Storms 17th Sep

Unread post by Richard »

Was looking good last evening when this warning was issued,will be interesting to see what if anything changes this morning from the MS,today weather set up are the types that suit my area better than just a straight SW wind changes that often miss here while hitting the plains,so here's hoping.
I'll be working from home today so i'll be fired up with camera ready

From the Metservice
Around midday a trough is expected to move east across the east of the North Island. From midday there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in Hawkes Bay with heavy rain, 10-15 mm/hr and hail of around 10 to 20mm. The risk is expected to diminish from mid afternoon as the trough moves away and strengthening westerlies at the surface push the showers offshore.

A cold outbreak is expected to move swiftly up the South Island during Monday,with significant upper level cooling occuring. The change should move over Otago, Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast in the afternoon, and over Marlborough,Wellington and the Wairarapa during the evening.

In Canterbury, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening before the change and associated with it, producing localised heavy rain of 10-15mm/hr and hail 5-15mm in diameter. While in the remaining areas up to the Kaikoura Coast as indicated on the map there is a low risk of thunderstorms developing with the southerly change.

A cold blustery southerly change with a good burst of rain. Thunderstorms? Not so sure about that...

Nice sunny warm day at the moment, 15.6 degrees :) my day off today, so if anything eventuates up here i'll be out in it taking photo's. Heading up to Kaikoura and coming back before 6pm, would be nice to catch something on the inland road on the way back

Fog has cleared here. Scappy hugh cloud to the west but mainly blue sky. and most importantly- a light-moderate NE has developed accross the city.

An area of heavy rain now showing as a red dot on the radar just coming on to Kurow,might be thunder in that considering the radar doesn't normally pick up much of the rainfall that far south.

High cloud has taken over the sky here, would be nice to have some 'relaxing' thunderstorms!

Yep thick high cloud here too with little heating now.
Front looks to have split and heading out to the east, to much W in the flow up top maybe.
Time will tell.

The air has felt more humid the last half-hour. Am in Ashburton, southerly change just arriving. Looks murky & misty to south. Heading home now.

Am hopefull of something but my gut tells me it is lesser of a chance unless this high cloud dissapears, if that high cloud is clearing that does sound more promising snowstormwatcher. Even though a southerly has just got to Ashburton I don't think it's the guts of the system which is still lying further back. Chch city may not see anything, could be more inland as per MS chart.

The murk and mist I saw from Ashburton was just that, with more of a south-easterly bringing it in.
Just dull air here at Mayfield now with distant mist; had a brief shower of whacking big raindrops a few minutes ago.
Odd day altogether.

Driving into Oamaru then and ran out of speed options on the wipers, ie driving rain, no thunder though.
Cold & cloudy now. Hope we find a sheltered place in Dunedin tonight.

Just gone Southerly here now, Some pretty strong wind gusts but nothing overly interesting just low cloud coming in from the southeast.

Raining lightly again;
sky very dark to the south: that wall of darkness approaching;
lightning-static on the radio.
13.1 degrees.
