Around midday a trough is expected to move east across the east of the North Island. From midday there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in Hawkes Bay with heavy rain, 10-15 mm/hr and hail of around 10 to 20mm. The risk is expected to diminish from mid afternoon as the trough moves away and strengthening westerlies at the surface push the showers offshore.
A cold outbreak is expected to move swiftly up the South Island during Monday, with significant upper level cooling occuring. The change should move over Otago, Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast in the afternoon, and over Marlborough,Wellington and the Wairarapa during the evening.
In Canterbury, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening before the change and associated with it, producing localised heavy rain of 10-15mm/hr and hail 5-15mm in diameter. While in the remaining areas up to the Kaikoura Coast as indicated on the map there is a low risk of thunderstorms developing with the southerly change.
