And here's the southerly - more of a south-easterly here - plum-blossom & bits of tree-leaves flying everywhere now.
Has become very dark, need lights on indoors!
Temp. on the way down, 12.0 already.

Lightning very close by - I think the lights & microwave oven surged a bit - hope it didn't fry anything! and a roll of thunder. Rain starting to rattle on the roof. Edit to add - hailing hard, frequent lightning.

Temp.down to 3.9 degrees now. Hail eased, lashing rain continues; just had another surge through lights, very unsettling.

Gust front arrived just after I took this panorama from Curraghs Rd. Just light rain to start and then I watched the heavy rain arriving up the road towards the car. Visibility dropped to less than 100m in some of the bursts.

Loud thunder almost overhead here.

WOW! THAT WAS SOME GUST FRONT!! have not seen a buster like that in a long long time, unfortunately i have un able to get any photos of it as i was just coming out of work and had no camera with me but yes that was some roll cloud!!
Heard two claps if thunder and seen a couple flahses, nothing great though but hopefully some people have more photos of that gust front, my sister took some on her camera so perhaps i might ask if i can share them on here.

cheers: mike

Nice afternoon with a light SE breeze, but here at 3:30pm, that niceness was interupted by a strong and cold Southerly onslaught of wind and rain. Some distant thunder heard to the west/NW, mostly the dump sound heard from here. Later some thunder heard to the east of here towards Christchurch.
Raining quite steady from then here not the 3 odd spits that I predicted with this front on another thread.
No hail or wintry stuff, just rain.

I took chase just after work was a mad dash to get home at 3pm grab the camera's and head north, went behind Sefton sat there for the southerly but nothing exciting really.
I seen one flash with a part of a bolt that came down to the west but with a few sheds in the way i shifted more NW towards Loburn and got another bright purple flash overhead while driving.
Sat in a subdivision for awhile but didnt view anything more, far too messy this front no structure at all dont think that was a roll cloud i surpose it could have been if it was moving abit slower.
So with all that mid level cloud and grey drabness you couldnt pick where the lightning was going to be, the typical isolated thunderstorms or CB's that come up with a change are much better to chase than that.
Worth a shot anyway and another chance none the less this early in the season, promises to be a good season touch wood.

That storm was really quick moving and a mess. Waimak River doesn't help not being able to get across it easy with options only being near the coast or gorge. Took a photo of the front west of West Melton but even that doesn't look that inspiring.

Nice pic Steven! And the radar did look good. Haven't heard any scferics for a bit now so will go home soon.

Saw some reasonable hail drifts in Oxford, not massive hail but heaps of say 8mm stones pilled up and across the road. I was probably just a few steps behind the main lightning active part as I came into Oxford. Oh well.... next time! :)

Cheers
Aaron

Yes, not a very sexy storm, most of the activity hidden by low cloud cover.I did see one 'sheet' in a cloud

15mm of rain in 2 and a half hours here. Sister said she got knocked to her feet and an elder man got hit against his car by the wind. Pot plants around the property were knocked over.

Rain and wind have eased off, dusting of snow above about 500m.
