General October Weather

Unread post by NZstorm »

October starts with some cooler showery weather for most!

I'll be keeping on eye on this trough for the possibility of thunder near Auckland Monday pm?

Will have to see how far north the system will actually come. Taranaki looks a best spot for the NI.

Hmm, I have a flat out day moving school mobile dental units for BOPDHB in the Eastern BOP. Whilst I'd love to see some lightning, I hope it leaves me alone until after I've finished should it come up East of the modeled path.

Of course I'm hoping I didn't just Jinx myself.

Maybe if the trough can slow down a bit there will be convection over the North Island Tuesday. A long shot but the UKmet shows it a close run thing.

Would you find it helpful if some of the attached data was available on the internet one day?

eg Solar radiation in central Christchurch may be of interest on a day like today (clouds are gathering in the last half hour with readings dropping from 1000 W/m^2 to under 250)? :-k

Some weak storms over the Waikato early this morning too.

There is a window this afternoon for thunderstorms/hailers over the wider Gisborne/East Cape region but the upper trough is on the move east.

500mb chart for 1pm.

Poor timing for the North Island with this cold upper level trough system but it did produce scattered thunderstorms pm for parts of BOP/Gisborne. I was at Hot Water Beach, Coromandel yesterday and could see some nice Cb down south.

Yes, that little part of the beach was packed otherwise a near empty pristine white sand beach, paradise found.

Yes. an interestingly boring day here. A lot of stratus with the resurrection of the north wind from the southerly change around 2pm. It was calm here for a while before the NE came back.

I see Niwa are still going for higher than normal pressures south of Australia and New Zealand, and lower pressures are forecast to the north of the North Island, resulting in a weaker than normal westerly flow over the country, Oct - Dec period.

Inspite of this week, the SW flow has been WSW so hasnt reached the speeds expected due to the anticyclones remaining over Australia and when they do they weaken and well north when they do come so it hasnt been as windy as it can be.

Certainly a windy start to the month, 60 km/h on the 2nd, and 64 km/h today which is the equal highest gust for the year

Another convergence moved through this afternoon.
I think that if this trend/pattern continues, maybe a convergence thunderstorm is on the cards this summer :D

Late Friday to Saturday will be an interesting day for the NI as a deep approaches NZ from the south.
A sufficient cold front is expected develop on it and bring the risk of gusty embedded thunderstorms from West coast of the SI to Auckland.

Looks like the front will greet Waikato early morning Saturday going by the latest GFS run . The west coast of the SI should have a bit of activity on it tomorrow.

Did a segment with Close Up on Monday earlier this week. Went on a storm chase, didn't end up being that great but apparently they are showing it tonight. So tune in at 7pm tonight on TV ONE.

It's a type of story where they tend to fill a gap so it might not appear if something more important comes up or they haven't finished editing it yet. Still, have been told it's going to show tonight so fingers crossed!

Cheers

It will be cool to see  .
I see the MS have a moderate risk for north canterbury tomorrow afternoon, its 50/50 as it will be very westerly so not the greatest conditions but perhaps something in the foothills around Cheviot area.
Fresh to strong gusty NW here today and just warming up abit now as the sun comes out, up to 22C now very nice.
