Re: General October Weather
Yes, definitely looks like an elevated storm setup. Haven't had one of these in a while now
Forecast soundings showing that 850mb is completely saturated throughout the day and into the evening extending the risk till then. Upper temps look fairly favorable at -17 to -18°C.
The Lifted Index can't be used in a situation like today to gauge lift as that is based on lifting parcels of air from the surface.

Re: General October Weather
Moisture chart showing the moisture plume coming onto the North Island this morning.
Classic warm frontal set up!
Patchy rain here with short heavy bursts from elevated convection. Rain will be south of Auckland this afternoon.
Chart is mixing ratio, not dewpoint.

Re: General October Weather
its a classic pressure wind setuplittle or no wind here so far
we have 'river of strong winds' on this side, i.e a pressure wind
i.e the NW wind does not want to blow over the land of the upper NI
and instead goes around it...i.e the wind is gale on this side and the outer hauraki gulf and eastern coromandel area and also Russel in the bay of islands, since it sticks out into the pressure wind, is also getting a gale (or near gale)
(I have been there in a good NW blow, its just like here )

Re: General October Weather
The SW wind does it over the south island, like you look at the surface pressure maps on Weather UK online the south island provides it and can be seen west of the south island and east of banks peninsular.

Re: General October Weather
looks like waiuku would have got a couple of rolls of thunder
looks like some new blow up plumes developing on the warm front a bit futher north than before
we might be more in the firing line for later today...

Re: General October Weather
In a nutshell looks like 20-40mm fell over Auckland/Waikato today and over 100mm is parts of Waitomo.(environment Waikato data)
Still showers, 16C here now but looking forward to a dry day tomorrow!

Re: General October Weather
2.2 deg. here and a mix of rain and snow, a little buildup beginning on the car.
[There was a Labour Weekend back in the mid to late '80s where there was a good half-inch of snow on the ground in Ashburton - someone will have the records, I'm sure. Also around Show Weekend 1976. Extraordinary climate!]

Re: General October Weather
The clouds to the south are looking thundery now, wouldn't be surprised if there is a rumble or two when the system gets here
