Low pressure system 8th-9th October

The rather deep low in the Tasman early week should bring precip to many places with the West Coast of the South Island getting the heaviest rain.

Looks to be a warm advective snow risk for the inland South Island with moist air over running cold air east of the Alps. Something to watch, heavy snow for the foothills atleast I would say.

Perhaps some embedded convection will spice up the front for the north. Looks like we get dps of 15C Monday.

the models also have another maybe even deeper low to follow close behind it too
this first low, the models have it moving into the tasman quickly but then stalling...blocking of the high to the east?

Surface temperature chart for NZ midday Monday.

Cold rain over the South Island will fall as snow over higher ground.
I see Met Service have a snow warning up for Canterbury high country including McKenzie.

I can't see Auckland getting much from the cold front tomorrow. Looks like a short spell of rain late afternoon/early evening. The milder weather will be nice though. It has felt like winter here last couple of days.

the front in the tasman is getting more organised and becoming more active this evening
lightning active now
and nice looking CB's on it by the looks of the latest sat map
the warm front ahead also looks like that is becoming more organised too

but it does look like the best of it all will be south of here...

Yes, the cold front in the Tasman looks great currently.

I see Qtwn is currently on 9C so not much chilling there tonight.

The system is not as cold as previously indicated in the models for the south.

We have got some showers here now from the warm front. Classic mid lattitude low.

I was standing on the hills above Porters Pass in perfect warm sunny weather yesterday, dramtic turnaround

Snowing on Castle Hill's webcam at 700 metres.
Heaviest falls seem to be north of the Rakaia river.

Tekapo webcam showing decent snow there now too. A good top up for the ski fields this system, hopefully not too low down though for those farmers in the midst of lambing

Plenty of rain in Methven, Westerfield and Mayfield areas this afternoon.
Car thermometer read 7 deg. up-country; presently it's 7.4 deg. here.
Saw a large bonfire with a column of smoke rising vertically several hundred feet, then bending away at that height towards the southeast. No wind to speak of on the ground in any of those areas.
