Thunderstorms East Coast SI 17th Nov

Unread post by Storm Struck »

Its fair to say tomorrow should be a reasonable set up for storms and they fall on a Saturday so most will be free to chase, simular set up to last Sunday but possibly abit better im sure we will see an updated map later tonight or tomorrow from MS with maybe even a high risk.
But a Moderate risk covers much of the east coast from Southland up to Marlborough tomorrow, i know theres a shot for the west coast too but we dont have too many members from there on here so will keep the topic as east coast for now.
The hail looks to be of reasonable size simular to last week 10-15mm but maybe slightly bigger over Mid Canterbury where the low crosses and slower storm motions could form before the southerly gives it a boot.
Look forward to another chase day, now to fix my lightning trigger :-k

Some Cb or Cu towering forms noticed from here this afternoon in TC, probably the ones that Orion and Snowwatcher were refering to in the Show Week weather topic.
Sort of late in the day for development, but then, it could be an indicator for tomorrow if the weather stays the same for today which it could do. :-$

Looks to be the risk of severe hail over mid Canterbury late afternoon! The 0-6km bulk shear difference looks to be around 35kts which should favour some storm organisation and larger than normal hail. An issue today though could be mid level cloud interfering with the surface heating and limiting potential instability. You need that sun out!

NW spillover style showers here this morning, Blue skies out to the east but more showers coming over from the hills.
doesn't look like the type of conditions that produce thunder in this area.

With the very cold upper level conditions moving in today sunny breaks this afternoon should be enough to set a few storms off. Good luck to all folk chasing today.

Theres some good chances we will see something significant today, and as NZstorm pointed out the hail size over mid canty could be abit bigger which is also where i think we will see the best heating ahead of where the main band to the south is and where the low crosses mid afternoon.
20+mm hail might need the bike helmits  , MS have highlighted an area of high risk but im sure that will change should storms become severe in this area and thats between Timaru and Rolleston would be the best area for storms today i am thinking.
I managed to sort out the trigger just a battery issue, the switch on the side bumps on easily  so might be a case of taking batteries out when not in use even though its screwed on.
Edit: to add its 8 years to the day i first signed up to this forum so heres hoping for some action _b

Just hit 20 degrees here now with overcast conditions building and a big NW like cloud moving in from the west. Seems to be NW up high. NE if you can call it that down low but really no wind at all to speak of.

In Omarama. Steady rain from the NW for the past hour and a half. Hard to imagine much 'daytime heating' around here today, it was much the same down at Benmore earlier.

My hopes are up for some over here on the west coast when the rain band clears but maybe a big fail by the looks of it on the east coast- to little to late maybe.
